Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Transportation seeks to hire a Bridge Tender for the Florence Bridge. The successful candidate will operate an electrically operated lift bridge and maintain constant watch by sight and ear for signals from boats and barges. This position also maintains navigation, roadway, and traffic control lighting as well as other traffic signaling devices.  

Essential Functions
  • Operates an electrically operated lift bridge.
  • Maintains constant watch by sight and sound for signals from boats and barges.
  • Maintains navigation, roadway, and traffic control lighting and other traffic signaling devices.
  • Monitors supplies and prepares reports.
  • Performs janitorial duties on the bridge tender house and Local Control Center.
  • Maintains records of names, sizes, direction, number, and time passage of vessels, and the time of bridge openings.
  • Observes the operation of machinery and reports needed maintenance for corrective action.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned which are reasonably related to the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of elementary school.
  • Requires one-year general mechanical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefers working knowledge of the operation of an electrically controlled bridge.
  • Prefers ability to keep legible records, make reports, and follow printed rules and regulations/instructions.
  • Prefers knowledge of the rules and regulations governing navigation of inland waterways.

  • Requires successful completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires a pre-employment physical and drug and alcohol screening.
  • This position is subject to random drug and alcohol screening.
