What is a part time counselor?

Part time counselors are professionals who provide counseling services on a flexible or reduced-hour basis, rather than working full time. They may work in schools, clinics, community organizations, or private practices, helping clients with issues such as mental health, career guidance, or personal development. Part time counselors often balance their schedules to accommodate other commitments or offer services during evenings and weekends. Their responsibilities and qualifications are generally similar to those of full-time counselors, though their caseloads may be smaller. This role is ideal for those seeking flexibility in their work-life balance while still making a positive impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time counselor?

To thrive as a Part Time Counselor, you generally need a degree in counseling, psychology, or a related field, along with relevant licensure or certification depending on your location. Familiarity with counseling software, electronic record-keeping systems, and assessment tools is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and empathy help counselors build trust and effectively support clients. These competencies ensure that counselors can provide ethical, effective guidance and emotional support, even within limited part-time hours.

How does a part time counselor typically coordinate with full-time staff and other team members to support clients effectively?

As a part-time counselor, collaboration with full-time staff and other professionals is essential to maintain continuity of care for clients. This often involves attending regular team meetings, sharing progress notes through secure digital systems, and participating in case consultations. While schedules may differ, part-time counselors usually coordinate closely with supervisors and case managers to ensure everyone is updated on client needs and treatment plans. Open communication and flexibility are key to successfully integrating into the broader counseling team and providing consistent support.

Job description

At McLeod Centers for Wellbeing, our mission is to build a foundation of healing and hope based on equity, education, and evidence-based practice for all communities. A nonprofit founded in 1969 in Charlotte, North Carolina, we have since grown to be one of the largest providers of comprehensive substance use disorder treatment in western North Carolina. From initial assessment to customized aftercare, McLeod Centers provides compassionate, steadfast support for our patients’ journey to recovery. We are looking for passionate people to join our team!

McLeod Centers for Wellbeing is seeking a Part-time Counselor to join our Opioid Treatment Program at our Monroe, NC location.
How will you help us achieve our mission? You will:
  • Be at the forefront of crafting person-centered treatment plans for patients in all stages of recovery.
  • Play a pivotal role in monitoring and evaluating client progress, adjusting treatments as necessary for optimal outcomes.
  • Lead individual and group counseling sessions to support both patients and their families.
  • Connect patients with vital support services, such as medical evaluation, mental health, and social support. Your impact will extend beyond our doors!
  • Participate in clinical supervision sessions to foster your professional growth and development.
What are the qualifications needed for this role?:
We're looking for Master's degree-level, fully licensed or associate licensed Family Counselors (LCAS, LMFT, LCSW, LCMHC).
What we offer you as an employee:
  • Generous Leave Policies: Part-time employees enjoy paid time off and additional benefits such as bereavement and parent-child educational leave.
  • Holiday Benefits: Celebrate 9 paid observed holidays and receive 1 floating holiday to use at your convenience. You will also receive a paid day off during your birthday month as our way of recognizing and celebrating you as a valued member of our team.
  • Student Loan Forgiveness: As an employee of a nonprofit organization, you qualify for Public Student Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) to assist with your student loans.
  • Continuous Growth Opportunities: Invest in your professional development with ongoing support and free continuing education opportunities across multiple disciplines. We also offer top-tier individual and group clinical supervision for professionals seeking CADC and LCAS licensures.
  • SUD Professional Licensure: McLeod Centers pays for initial CADC certification or LCAS licensure, including the application fee, background check fee, board registration fee, initial exam fee, and all supervision requirements.
Bilingual applicants will receive an additional five percent (5%) pay differential, subject to verification of language proficiency.
Research indicates that women and underrepresented groups tend to apply for jobs only when they believe they meet 100% of the qualifications. At McLeod Centers, we encourage you to challenge this statistic and apply. It's rare for anyone to meet every qualification. We look forward to hearing from you!
