Part Time Counseling information

What is part time counseling?

Part time counseling refers to providing mental health support, guidance, and therapy to clients on a part-time basis, often with flexible or limited hours compared to full-time counselors. Part time counselors can work in schools, private practices, community centers, or online. They may help individuals, couples, or groups address emotional, behavioral, or psychological issues. This role is ideal for professionals who prefer a more flexible schedule or are balancing other commitments.

How do part-time counselors typically manage their caseloads and maintain effective client relationships given limited working hours?

Part-time counselors often need to be highly organized and intentional in scheduling client sessions to ensure continuity of care despite fewer hours. They may focus on a smaller caseload, prioritize clear communication, and use digital tools for scheduling and follow-up. Collaboration with full-time colleagues, participation in team meetings, and thorough documentation help maintain seamless support for clients. It’s common for part-time counselors to coordinate with other professionals to ensure clients' needs are met, making time management and teamwork essential skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Counselor, you need a background in psychology or counseling, often supported by a relevant degree and state licensure or certification. Familiarity with counseling software, case management systems, and telehealth platforms is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and cultural sensitivity help counselors build trust and rapport with clients. These competencies are vital for delivering effective support, managing diverse caseloads, and maintaining professional standards in a flexible, part-time setting.

What is the difference between Part Time Counseling vs Full Time Counseling?

AspectPart Time CounselingFull Time Counseling
CredentialsTypically requires a relevant master's degree and licensureSame as part time, often with additional certifications for specialization
Work EnvironmentFlexible hours, often in clinics, schools, or community centersFull schedule, often in similar settings with more consistent hours
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by clinics, schools, private practices for flexible staffingStandard employment in healthcare, educational, or mental health organizations
Workload & HoursFewer hours, typically less than 20 hours/weekFull-time hours, usually 35-40 hours/week

Part Time Counseling offers flexible scheduling with fewer hours, ideal for those balancing other commitments. Full Time Counseling provides a consistent schedule with more hours, suitable for those seeking full employment in mental health services. Both roles require similar credentials and are common in healthcare and educational settings.

What field of part time counseling pays the most?

In part-time counseling, specialized fields such as mental health counseling for substance abuse, marriage and family therapy, or clinical psychology tend to offer higher pay due to advanced training and certification requirements. Counselors with additional credentials like licensure or experience in high-demand areas can earn higher hourly rates, especially in private practice or specialized clinics.

Job description

Agency Overview:
Since 1982 Wellspring has championed mental health recovery in Louisville. Serving some of the most vulnerable people in our community, Wellspring is a pillar of hope. We support adults in building healthy & hopeful lives through behavioral health, supporting housing, & employment services. We believe recovery is possible for all people with psychiatric disabilities and our recovery-oriented programming incorporates person-centered care & utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach.
Wellspring's success depends on our highly qualified and dedicated staff. We hire individuals who are committed to excellent service to our clients, to each other, and to the community. We value diversity, equity, & inclusion and encourage all people to apply!
What employees say about Wellspring...
Psychiatric Rehabilitation Counselor:
Make a direct impact in someone's recovery...every shift.
Wellspring is seeking a compassionate and dependable Psychiatric Rehabilitation Counselor to support adults living with serious mental illness through their recovery journey. This is a hands-on role for someone who can build trust, remain steady during difficult moments, and help clients strengthen the everyday skills they need to live more independently.
You will provide supportive counseling, assist with daily living activities, monitor self-administration of medication, facilitate groups and social interaction, respond to crises, and help maintain a safe and therapeutic environment. This position is an excellent opportunity to gain meaningful behavioral health experience while making a visible difference in the lives of the people we serve.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelor of Arts (BA) is preferred.
  • At least one year of experience providing support, supervision, coaching, assistance, or daily living support to individuals in a behavioral health, social service, residential, community-based, healthcare, educational, or related human services setting is required for applicants with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Applicants with a bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., psychology, social work, human services, sociology, etc.) may substitute relevant education for the one-year experience requirement.
Salary:
$15 - $19 per hour
Shift/Schedule:
Part-time: 11:45 AM - 6 PM (2-3 days per week)
Part-time: 3:45 PM and 12:00 AM (2-3 days per week)
Conditions of Employment:
  • Offers of employment are contingent upon successfully passing a pre-employment drug screening. This position is a part of an annual, random drug-testing program.
  • This position requires a criminal background check, clearances of state and federal background checks, multiple abuse/sex offender registries, and clearance of exclusion lists prior to employment.
  • Must have access to a personal, registered, and insured vehicle to transport clients (when company vehicles aren't available) and to travel between client locations and related appointments.
  • Must possess a valid, active driver's license and be in good standing.
The Benefit That's Hard to Find:
One of the biggest reasons our employees stay at Wellspring is something harder to list on a benefits sheet: you can actually make and see your impact here. We pride ourselves in being large enough to make a difference and small enough that your voice matters. Being a mission-driven nonprofit with a collaborative culture, employees have the ability to:
  • Work autonomously
  • Advocate for clients
  • Implement ideas quickly by working closely with those who can make fast decisions
  • Focus on care rather than bureaucracy
In other words, less red tape and more meaningful work.
For our part-time employees, we offer:
Time to Recharge:
  • Generous paid time off (PTO) starting after 90 days of employment
  • 9 paid holidays
Financial Security:
  • 401(k) with 100% employer match up to 4%
Support for the Work You Do:
  • Mileage reimbursement for work-related travel
  • Collaborative culture where staff ideas are heard and can quickly translate into improvements
  • Free downtown parking
  • Use of company vehicle, when available
