Job description

The Electronic Production and Design Department at Berklee College of Music seeks a part-time faculty member to teach courses in SuperCollider, computational sound, and algorithmic music systems.

The successful candidate will possess deep expertise in SuperCollider as a platform for sound synthesis, digital signal processing (DSP), algorithmic composition, and interactive audio systems. The faculty member will guide students in developing both technical proficiency and creative fluency through code-based approaches to sound creation and musical expression. This position supports Berklee's growing emphasis on creative coding, generative systems, immersive audio, experimental electronic music, and emerging creative technologies.

This is a part-time faculty position with the opportunity to teach throughout the academic year with a renewable contract, initial appointment beginning in September, 2026. Compensation is commensurate with professional experience.

Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate courses focused on SuperCollider and computational approaches to sound and music generation and exploration.

  • Guide students in the application of sound synthesis, digital signal processing, algorithmic composition, and real-time audio programming through SuperCollider.

  • Guide students in the design and implementation of custom synthesis instruments, generative music systems, and interactive audio applications.

  • Teach foundational and advanced programming concepts as they relate to music and sound.

  • Develop assignments and projects that integrate technical understanding with artistic practice and creative problem solving.

  • Provide mentorship and feedback on student projects and performances.

  • Participate in departmental activities and collaborate with faculty across electronic music, sound design, coding, and immersive media initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Professional or academic expertise in SuperCollider.

  • Strong understanding of digital signal processing, sound synthesis, and computer music systems.

  • Experience creating original work using code-based approaches to sound and music.

  • Ability to teach both technical concepts and creative applications.

  • Excellent communication, mentoring, and teaching skills, with the ability to translate complex concepts in coding, sound synthesis, and digital signal processing into engaging, student-centered learning experiences.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or equivalent professional achievement.

  • College-level teaching experience.

  • Experience with algorithmic composition, generative music, or interactive audio systems.

  • Knowledge of additional creative coding environments such as Max/MSP, ChucK, TidalCycles, Python, or related technologies.

  • Active artistic, research, or professional practice in electronic music, sound art, computational media, or music technology.

About the Department

The Electronic Production and Design Department prepares students for careers at the intersection of music, technology, performance, and innovation. Students engage with contemporary practices including electronic music production, sound design, digital instrument performance, coding, immersive audio, game audio, interactive media, and emerging creative technologies.
