Job Summary

The Materials Testing Technician is responsible for performing and overseeing materials testing and inspection services on CDOT projects. This position serves as a technical resource to project managers, engineers, and junior technicians while ensuring testing activities comply with applicable standards, project specifications, and quality requirements. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in field and laboratory testing of soils, concrete, asphalt and related construction materials; possesses multiple industry certifications; and can work independently with minimal supervision.


Responsibilities

  • Perform and oversee field and laboratory testing of construction materials including soils, aggregate, concrete, asphalt, grout, and related materials.
  • Prepare accurate field reports, test results, observations, calculations, sketches, and photographic documentation.
  • Interpret project specifications and testing requirements.ย 
  • Identify non-conforming work and communicate findings to project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients.
  • Coordinate testing schedules and priorities among multiple active projects.ย 
  • Supervise technician testing activities and provide technical guidance and mentoring to entry-level and mid-level technicians.ย 
  • Assist with technician training, development, and certification preparation.ย 
  • Manage office accreditations related to field and materials testing.
  • Maintain testing equipment, calibration records, and quality assurance documentation.ย 
  • Follow Shannon & Wilson's Quality Assurance policy.ย 
  • Follow and promote Shannon & Wilson's Health & Safety and Loss Prevention procedures and policies.ย 
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor.ย 

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college education preferred.ย 
  • Minimum of 10 years' of construction materials testing and inspection experience. ย 
  • Experience coordinating testing activities and mentoring technical staff.
  • Experience working on CDOT projects, preferred.ย 
  • Accreditations in soils, concrete, and asphalt required (WAQTC, ACI, and CAPA certifications).ย 
  • Ability to work hours in excess of 40 per week and weekends as needed.ย 
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.ย 
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy. ย 
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels.ย 
  • Personable, flexible, and professional demeanor.ย ย 
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision.ย ย 
  • The willingness and ability to travel to support the needs of other Shannon & Wilson offices.ย ย ย

Level Placement


Typically, depending on an applicant's education, experience, overall abilities, alignment with the needs of the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, a Senior-Level Materials Testing Technician typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Technical Services IV or Senior level with compensation ranging from $35.00 to $45.00 per hour.
