Job description

The Ecological Restoration Designer is responsible for designing, permitting, building, monitoring, and adaptively managing ecological restoration projects.  This includes developing site-specific restoration plans that balance ecological function, aesthetics, and sustainability while overseeing project implementation. The role also involves training staff in restoration principles, design methodologies, and field techniques to ensure project success


Key Responsibilities

Sales, Marketing, & Business Development:

  • Actively prospect and generate new ecological restoration business opportunities.
  • Manage all aspects of sales (design, permit, build) within the assigned territory, including client engagement, marketing, customer service, and administrative tasks.
  • Respond promptly to new project leads, conduct client meetings, and develop appropriate scopes of work.
  • Set personal sales goals with the immediate supervisor and work towards achieving them.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with regulatory agencies.
  • Represent the company positively within professional, trade, and civic organizations.
  • Network with green industry businesses to identify new opportunities.
  • Contribute to local office marketing strategies and initiatives.
  • Represent the company at industry trade shows and events.

Project Management & Administration:

  • Oversee ecological restoration projects from inception to completion, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and client expectations.
  • Collaborate with permitting teams, including landscape architects, attorneys, engineers, and builders, to maintain project timelines, client goals, and regulatory compliance.
  • Apply expertise in ecological restoration and environmental permitting to ensure high-quality, scientifically sound work.
  • Develop species-specific programs using Tree and Shrub Care Plan technology.
  • Lead technical presentations at regulatory review meetings to advocate for clients and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure contracts are signed before job commencement.
  • Prepare professional written reports and communications aligned with company standards.
  • Maintain timely communication and adherence to company policies.
  • Secure approval for all purchases from the appropriate division or home office.
  • Perform assigned non-sales tasks, such as inventory and safety equipment management.
  • Maintain company-issued vehicles in accordance with company policies.

Personnel Management:

  • Provide technical guidance to design staff, ensuring that ecological principles and innovative design solutions are integrated into each project.
  • Supervise project execution, ensuring work aligns with contract terms and client satisfaction.
  • Participate in hiring and training production personnel.
  • Develop and implement training programs to educate staff on ecological restoration principles, field techniques, and safety protocols.
  • Conduct and participate in safety meetings.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative team environment.
  • Attend sales meetings and training sessions.
  • Participate in employee performance reviews.

Safety & Regulatory Compliance:

  • Implement and enforce all safety, transportation, and pesticide compliance programs.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and high-quality outcomes during construction phases.
  • Maintain necessary licensing and certifications.
  • Adhere to professional dress and hygiene standards.

Miscellaneous:

  • Serve as an expert witness in court or governmental hearings (if applicable).
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Local or Division Manager.

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Landscape Architecture, Natural Resources, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in ecological restoration.
  • Strong knowledge of ecological restoration design and implementation techniques.
  • Familiarity with environmental permitting processes.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
