What is a part time configuration manager?

Part time configuration managers are professionals who oversee and maintain the consistency and integrity of a company's IT systems or project configurations, but work less than full-time hours. Their responsibilities typically include managing changes to software, hardware, documentation, and processes, ensuring that all modifications are tracked and implemented correctly. They collaborate with development, operations, and quality assurance teams to support change management, version control, and compliance with industry standards. By working part time, they offer flexibility to organizations needing configuration management expertise without committing to a full-time hire.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time configuration manager?

To thrive as a Part Time Configuration Manager, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience with configuration management processes, often supported by a degree in information technology or a related field. Familiarity with configuration management tools such as Git, Subversion, or specialized CMDB software, along with relevant certifications like CMII or ITIL, is highly beneficial. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to coordinate across teams help someone stand out in this role. These skills and qualifications are vital for maintaining consistency, reducing errors, and ensuring smooth operations in managing system changes and configurations.

How does a part time configuration manager effectively coordinate with full time team members to ensure continuity and accuracy in configuration management processes?

As a part-time Configuration Manager, maintaining open and proactive communication is critical to ensure smooth hand-offs and updates between yourself and full-time team members. Utilizing shared documentation tools, regularly scheduled status meetings, and clear process guidelines helps prevent gaps in configuration tracking and control. It's common to work closely with IT, development, and operations staff to review changes, manage version control systems, and address discrepancies swiftly. Building strong relationships and fostering a collaborative environment make it easier to stay aligned with project timelines and quality standards, even when working reduced hours.

In this role, you will be responsible for equipping all Bechtel employees with consistent AI knowledge - terminology, safe, secure, and responsible use, opportunities, and limits - and for advancing organizational AI competency in support of Bechtel’s ongoing EPC transformation.
This role owns the program end-to-end: setting training strategy, managing curriculum and content development, directing multi-modal delivery, overseeing third-party providers, and reporting completion and competency metrics against enterprise targets. The AI Training Manager leads a team of content authors, facilitators, and coordinators and partners with GBUs, Functions, and Services - as well as Learning & Development, AI specialists, and work-process experts - to establish a durable AI training culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and the integration of AI tools into everyday workflows.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Own and execute Bechtel’s Enterprise AI Training Program, including end-to-end - strategy, roadmap, milestones, and status reporting - equipping all employees with consistent AI baseline knowledge and advancing organizational AI competency as part of Bechtel’s EPC transformation.
  • Develop, implement, and manage an AI competency framework, keeping content and progression aligned with the organizational Job Architecture framework.
  • Lead, develop, and collaborate with a team of content authors, facilitators, and coordinators; set content standards, learning-design quality, and delivery consistency across the enterprise.
  • Oversee training delivery across in-person, virtual, and on-demand formats - via our Learning Management System (LMS), custom developed AI-driven solutions, and vetted third-party providers.
  • Manage third-party AI training and content providers, including vetting, procurement, and ongoing alignment with Learning & Development priorities and enterprise requirements.
  • Own configuration and maintenance of AI courses in the Learning Management System, ensuring accurate completion records and competency-data integrity as the official reporting source.
  • Deliver AI training status reporting, competency metrics, and success criteria.
  • Ensure all training content and delivery align with Bechtel’s governance, data-privacy, ethics, and intellectual-property protection requirements.
  • Develop and execute change communications in partnership with the communications team to build a sustainable AI training culture of continuous learning.
  • Manage the program budget in coordination with the AI Center of Excellence and the owning organizations of function- and discipline-specific courses.
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and 10–15 years of relevant experience in learning & development, training, enablement, or a related field.
  • Experience building and scaling enterprise AI or digital upskilling programs across a large, global workforce.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into clear, understandable language for non-technical audiences.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or similar products.
  • Experience with curriculum and instructional design and multi-modal delivery (in-person, virtual, and on-demand).
  • Working knowledge of Learning Management System configuration, completion tracking, and competency measurement.
  • Familiarity with change management, communications planning, and learning design applied to technology adoption.
  • Background in the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) industry or another regulated, technical environment.
