How much do part time computational engineering jobs pay per year?

As of May 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for part time computational engineering in the United States is $121,515.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $111,500.00 and $131,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Computational Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Computational Engineer, a solid background in mathematics, computer science, and engineering principles, often supported by a relevant degree, is essential. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or MATLAB, simulation tools, and experience with computational modeling software are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective time management, and clear communication enable one to excel in collaborative and deadline-driven environments. These skills ensure accurate modeling, efficient problem-solving, and successful project contributions within limited working hours.

What are some typical projects or tasks assigned to part-time computational engineers, and how do they collaborate with full-time team members?

Part-time computational engineers are often tasked with supporting simulation runs, developing or optimizing algorithms, and analyzing data sets under the guidance of senior engineers. They frequently work on well-defined modules within larger projects, providing flexibility for both the team and the individual. Collaboration with full-time team members typically occurs through regular meetings, code reviews, and shared documentation platforms, ensuring alignment and integration of work. This structure allows part-time engineers to make meaningful contributions while managing their schedules, and also offers valuable exposure to industry-standard workflows and tools.

What is a part time computational engineering job?

A part time computational engineering job involves using computer-based methods and mathematical models to solve engineering problems, but with a flexible or reduced work schedule. Part time computational engineers may work on tasks such as simulations, data analysis, or software development for engineering applications. This type of position is ideal for students, professionals seeking work-life balance, or those looking to gain experience while pursuing other commitments. The role typically requires strong programming skills, proficiency in mathematical modeling, and familiarity with engineering principles. Hours and responsibilities can vary depending on the employer's needs.

What is the difference between Part Time Computational Engineering vs Part Time Software Developer?

AspectPart Time Computational EngineeringPart Time Software Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field; knowledge of programming and simulation toolsBachelor's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related; proficiency in programming languages
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, engineering firms, or academic settings; project-based tasksTech companies, startups, or freelance; coding and application development
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, research institutions, manufacturingSoftware companies, tech startups, freelance platforms

While both roles involve programming and technical skills, Part Time Computational Engineering focuses on applying engineering principles to simulations and modeling, often within research or industrial contexts. In contrast, Part Time Software Developers primarily create, test, and maintain software applications. The credentials overlap in programming knowledge, but the focus and work environment differ significantly.

Job description

About the Opportunity

Job Summary

We invite applications for Part-time Lecturer (PTL) positions at the graduate level. We seek a colleague with expertise in bioinformatics and computational genomics to teach BIOL 6216 Applied Bioinformatics for the Cell and Gene Therapy Master's Programs, depending on program needs and enrollment. This course introduces foundational bioinformatics concepts, computational techniques, and programming skills essential for analyzing genomic and sequencing data, particularly in the context of genetic modification and therapeutic genome editing.

Key Responsibilities

The Part-time Lecturer will review and learn key teaching points within existing instructor guides and materials, prepare and deliver lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises based on provided course content, and facilitate in-person or online class discussions that encourage active learning and respectful debate. They will guide students through bioinformatics analyses in the context of genetic modification and therapeutic genome editing, including sequencing data interpretation and computational workflows, provide timely feedback, grading, and coaching to support student learning, and maintain consistent engagement with students regarding their performance and progress; and adhering to Northeastern's policies.

Part-time instructors work under the direction of the program director and will hold office hours as appropriate

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field, and have at least three to five years of experience in bioinformatics, preferably in a therapeutic or research setting. They should have demonstrated experience teaching or supporting graduate-level courses, particularly in bioinformatics or genomic data analysis, and possess strong programming skills in languages commonly used in bioinformatics, such as Python and R. Candidates should also have experience with genomic data analysis tools and platforms, including NGS pipelines, RNA-seq, or variant calling, and a strong understanding of cell and gene therapy concepts and applications. Effective communication skills, an open and supportive teaching style, and prior experience in a diverse higher education environment are also highly desirable.
