Physician Leader Wanted for P/T CMO Role at Johnston Memorial Hospital-Abingdon, Virginia

Ballad Health is seeking a dynamic physician leader to serve as Vice President, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Johnston Memorial Hospital. The CMO provides strategic and clinical leadership to support high-quality patient care, physician engagement, operational excellence, and regulatory compliance.

This role serves as the primary physician leader for the facility, partnering with administration, medical staff, and system leadership to advance quality outcomes, patient safety, physician alignment, and organizational performance. The CMO promotes collaboration among employed and independent physicians while supporting Ballad Health's Mission, Vision, and Values.

Opportunity Details?

  • Lead initiatives to improve quality, patient safety, and clinical outcomes.

  • Foster strong relationships and engagement with the Medical Staff.

  • Oversee credentialing, privileging, peer review, and Medical Staff leadership development.

  • Ensure readiness and compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies, including The Joint Commission and CMS.

  • Partner with hospital and system leadership to drive clinical process improvement and operational excellence.

  • Support physician alignment, strategic growth initiatives, and referral development.

  • Advance best practices, clinical protocols, benchmarking, and performance improvement efforts.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.

  • Board Certification through an American Board of Medical Specialties member board.

  • Active and unrestricted medical license in the appropriate state.

  • Physician leadership experience, including progressive Medical Staff leadership roles or at least two years in a physician executive position.

  • Knowledge of healthcare quality, healthcare finance, EMR systems, credentialing, and regulatory requirements.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced management or business education (MBA, MHA, MMM, MPH, or similar).

  • American Association for Physician Leadership training or certification.
