Job description

Position Title: Part-Time Custodian
Reports To: Director of Buildings & Grounds
Directly Supervises: N/A


Summary of Position: The Part-Time Custodian is responsible for maintaining the congregation's buildings and grounds in good physical condition with a clean and neat appearance, for maintaining proper security of church property, ensuring that the facilities are ready for scheduled use, and providing input for both preventative and long-term maintenance planning for the church. Instructions to the custodian are generally specific (following weekly checklists); however, the custodian must be able to evaluate work and make changes as needed to complete the task on a daily basis without the presence of a supervisor.


I. Maintenance of Buildings and Grounds

  1. Responsible for maintaining the facilities of the church including:
    1. Heating (boilers) and air conditioning maintenance- adding chemicals, blowing the boilers down, etc. Repairs to be done by a licensed vendor.
    2. Snow and ice removal from parking lots and sidewalks.
    3. Lawn mowing, weed control, and landscaping, as needed.
    4. General custodial care of church facilities, including the maintenance of the buildings' floors, carpets, walls, restrooms, kitchens, etc. in a clean, orderly, and sanitary manner.
    5. Working conditions include: restricted movement, dirty environments, and bending down and lifting and/or carrying heavy objects (at least 50 lbs.).
    6. May be exposed to hot and cold temperatures, noise, slippery surfaces, rain and snow.


II. Services to Church Members, Committees, and the Community

  1. Ensure that rooms and facilities are set up and ready as scheduled.
  2. Coordinate the clean-up and reorganization of rooms in a timely manner after special use to be ready for the normal activities of the church.
  3. Work schedule may also include special church services, weddings, and the Performing Arts Series events.


III. Security

  1. Ensure the building is secure during church programming.
  2. Ensure the building is secure at the end of each day and whenever the church is scheduled to be closed by maintaining lock-up procedures (turning off lights, ensuring no one is left in the building, ensuring doors are latched and locked, and setting the alarm).


IV. Preventative Maintenance and Long-Term Maintenance

  1. Monitor equipment for proper operation and recommend any corrective action as appropriate.
  2. Monitor custodial supplies and inform Director of Buildings and Grounds when reorders are needed.
  3. Give input on a long-term maintenance plan, including a preventative maintenance schedule.


V. Other Responsibilities

  1. Regular check-ins with the Director of Buildings and Grounds.
  2. Semi-annually, develop personal and professional goals in conjunction with the Personnel Committee.
  3. Participate in an initial probationary review after 90-days and an ongoing annual performance review with the Personnel Committee. This will include an appraisal of job performance, a review of results achieved on previously set goals, and goals created for the next year.
  4. Other duties as assigned.


VI. General Terms of Employment and Benefits

  1. General terms of employment and benefits are set forth in the Personnel Policy and Procedures Manual of the Church.
  2. Wages are established annually by the Session at the recommendation of the Personnel Committee.
  3. Must establish and maintain effective, harmonious, cooperative, and productive working relationships with Director of Buildings and Grounds, Pastor/Head of Staff, all other staff, members, and guests.
  4. Work Time: This is a part-time, non-exempt position. The position may average up to 25 hours per week, based on church needs.
  5. Specific schedule may be negotiated, but will include weekends based on church needs.
