Job Title: Chess Tutor

Department: Dream Center

Reports To: Dream Center Supervisor

FLSA Status: Part Time, 15 hours per week

Safety Sensitive: No


Schedule: 3:30pm-6:30pm Monday - Friday


Job Summary:

Under the guidance of the Dream Center and Family Evening Program Supervisor, the Dream Center Chess Tutor will motivate, lead, and inspire children and volunteers with clarity, dignity, and respect while being responsible for the daily operations of Dream Center tutoring. This role also includes designing tailored chess lesson plans that strengthen strategic thinking and game skills for students of varying levels, maintaining an engaging learning environment, and supporting student growth through ongoing instruction and feedback.


Specific Duties:

  • Set up, facilitate tutoring and clean up Dream Center nightly
  • Create and prepare material for distribution
  • Assist in the development of chess skills with preschool through high school children
  • Engage children in academic activities
  • Design tailored chess lesson plans that enhance strategic thinking and game skills for students of varying levels
  • Analyze students’ games to identify strengths and weaknesses, provide constructive feedback, and foster critical problem-solving skills
  • Organize and support chess tournaments and other enrichment activities while tracking student participation and progressAssist in compiling data for reports as necessary
  • Must be present at all times when volunteers are on-site
  • Charging and monitoring all Dream Center electronics (laptops).
  • Compile daily tracking and data reports
  • Track and measure various demographics and results for reporting purposes
  • Maintain names and track students’ progress
  • Assist Dream Center and Family Evening Program Manager in confidence with any situation that may arise involving children, guests, volunteers or otherwise.
  • Perform other duties assigned by Dream Center and Family Evening Program Manager.
  • Participate in and serve as a model for SVdP’s Culture of Philanthropy, and ensure SVdP volunteers feel welcomed and appreciated *

Preferred Skills/Abilities:


  • Clerical, computer, and administrative aptitude are beneficial for this position
  • Bilingual abilities (Spanish/English) preferred, but not required
  • Enthusiasm in working with children, and being a role model to all
  • 2+ years’ experience working with children ages 4+


Required/Desired Skills:


  • 6 + months experience participating in a chess club
  • Ability to work 3:30-6:30pm – Monday through Friday including Holidays
  • Desire to help students succeed and be creative, specifically in K-12 chess skills.
  • Public Speaking: Ability to speak to small groups
  • Team Oriented: Able to collaborate well with others. 
  • Leadership: Ability to take initiative and provide direction to others.
