Pensacola State College is accepting applications for a part-time, on-call Bus Driver, scheduled as needed. The part-time bus driver provides bus driving, vehicle safety, and mechanical inspection services supporting the College's students and employees. Reports to the Transportation Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspection of bus mechanical systems, including but not limited to tires, gas, oil, battery, air conditioner, heat, and windshield wipers.

  • Performs bus maintenance before and after all trips, including but not limited to cleaning aisles, seats, bathrooms, windows, and the exterior and interior of buses.

  • Schedules bus driver(s) and secures charters for Athletics and Student Services.

  • Becomes knowledgeable of all trip routes before departure.

  • Discusses routes with sponsors before leaving and follows sponsors' planned routes as directed.

  • Coordinates a designated departure area and time.

  • Reports mechanical problems to the Transportation Manager.

  • Follows all Florida and U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) rules and regulations.

  • Maintains a driving log that meets U.S. Department of Transportation regulations.

  • Makes independent decisions to safeguard passengers and Pensacola State College property.

  • Responsible for proctoring driver tests for College van operation.

  • Responsible for knowing and conforming to all safety practices and regulations in this specific area and position. Unsafe conditions should be reported to the immediate supervisor and the Pensacola State College Police Department/Public Safety.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and correspondence.

  • Assist travelers with baggage, and/or loading and unloading large items.

  • Ability to write reports concerning transportation delays, accidents, gas mileage, bus malfunctions, needed repairs, etc.

  • Must be able to comply with traffic regulations in order to operate vehicles safely and courteously.

  • Ability to check the condition of a vehicle's tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, fuel, water, and safety equipment to ensure that all systems are in working order.

  • Must be able to instruct travelers regarding boarding and exiting the bus and acceptable behavior while traveling.

  • Ability to read maps and follow written and verbal geographic directions.

  • Ability to regulate heating, lighting, and ventilation systems for passenger comfort.

  • Maintain knowledge of first-aid procedures and administer as needed.

  • Be aware and follow College procedures for reporting accidents, and/or damaged property.

  • Job requirements include driving long periods of time, including night driving.

  • Assignments may be out of the district and include overnight stays.

  • Work hours and assignments will include nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Subject to random drug screenings and/or alcohol breath testing under Department of Transportation (DoT) rules.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and two years of full-time experience driving a bus or truck cross country. Knowledge of the basic elements of bus mechanics. Must possess a valid Florida Class B commercial driver's license with a passenger endorsement and an air brake endorsement, proof of insurance, and have established a safe driving record. Successful results of a criminal background check are required. Successful results of a DoT drug screening. Successful completion of a DoT required physical exam.

Pursuant to College policy, it is an employment eligibility requirement for an applicant to meet the requirements of 435.04(2), Florida Statutes, related to background investigations. Any person failing to meet the requirements of the statute will be deemed not qualified to hold employment in this position. A Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) approved background check will be conducted on every successful candidate as a condition of employment, and any person who fails to disclose any adverse information contained in the background investigation when submitting the employment application will be disqualified from employment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Functions of the job may require extended periods of time in a seated position. Use of eyesight for operating a vehicle. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; sit, climb, or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Hourly Rate: $22.00 - $27.00
