Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Building Trades Maintenance Worker (Half-Time) position. The Building Trades Maintenance Worker (Half-Time) is a part-time (20 hours per week), year-round position. The expected salary range for this job opportunity is: $22.49 to $25.00.


The salary offered will vary based on a number of factors, including but not limited to relevant education, training, and experience, tenure status, and other nondiscriminatory business considerations. The Building Trades Maintenance Worker (Half-Time) is responsible for assisting carpenters and painters in the inspection, repair, installation, modification, rebuilding, construction and maintenance of woodwork, masonry, roofing, doors, and hardware on the various structures throughout campus. Independently performs routine tasks related to the above, including the installation of artwork, banners, plaques, signage, window blinds and shades, and general medium-skilled handyperson tasks. Responsible for participating in event set-ups, including staging, chairs, tables, signs, etc.


The position is designated as providing essential services and may be required to report to work or remain on duty even when the College is closed. Our work is central to student life, and their needs occur at a variety of times throughout the day, week, and year and in such, a flexible schedule with extended shift times and emergency call-ins may be required. The work schedule may vary and corresponds to the College's operational needs, but generally is Monday through Friday.


The position takes a primary responsibility for responding to calls such as damaged or missing window screens, blinds, paper dispensers, as well as furniture repair and adjustments.


Summary of Responsibilities:


Building Trades

  • Perform general medium-skilled building trades, carpentry, and painting work required to maintain safe and orderly conditions in buildings and adjacent grounds and respond to various customer requests in accordance with established work routines and safety procedures

Projects

  • Assist other Building Trades staff members on projects that require more than one person to efficiently or safely accomplish tasks involving similar work described above

Special Requests

  • At the direction of the Building Trades Supervisor or Service Center Supervisor, provide special services for campus customers as needs arise

Qualifications:


Required


  • Familiarity with basic carpentry tools and skills
  • Basic math skills, including adding and subtracting
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong customer service, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Attention to detail
  • Successful completion of required reference and background checks
  • An acceptable criminal offender records information (CORI) check
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical and lift test
  • Valid driver's license and successful completion of Five College Risk Management driver credentialing program.
