POSITION SUMMARY: Our neighborhood-based independent Book Shop is hiring a part-time Sales Associate who enjoys working with people and brings a positive, can-do attitude to every shift. You'll spend most of your time on the sales floor, helping customers, collaborating with management and fellow team members, and keeping the store welcoming, organized, and easy to shop in.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Customer Service & Sales:

  • Greet customers warmly, offer assistance, and provide attentive, knowledgeable service.
  • Help customers find books, gifts, and other items that fit their interests and needs.
  • Answer basic questions and direct more complex concerns to a supervisor or manager.
  • Accurately ring up purchases using cash, credit, gift cards, and other payment types.

Store Support:

  • Follow directions from supervisors and managers to complete daily tasks and projects on time.
  • Work cooperatively with team members, sharing information about products, events, and store policies.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with team members to keep the shift running smoothly.

Store Presentation & Maintenance:

  • Regularly walk the sales floor to straighten shelves, restock displays, and maintain attractive sections.
  • Assist with simple merchandising (face-outs, table arrangements, signage) following store guidelines.
  • Help with everyday cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting shelves, cleaning windows, and taking out trash.
  • Contribute to a tidy, safe, and inviting environment for both customers and staff.

Schedule:

  • This is a part-time position requiring consistent, year-round availability.
  • Weekly shifts may be regular or vary depending on store needs, events, and seasonal business.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ideally 1-2+ years of retail or other customer-facing experience; bookstore or literary experience is a plus but not required. At least 18 years of age. High school diploma or GED preferred. Basic reading, writing, and math skills, including comfort with cash handling and simple transactions. Clear, friendly verbal communication and ease in interacting with a wide range of people. Ability to work well on a team, stay calm during busy periods, and maintain a proactive, can-do attitude. Flexibility to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Genuine interest in contributing to a lively, inclusive, community-oriented independent bookstore.
