Job description

High Point University is currently seeking a Technical & Collection Services Assistant. The Technical & Collection Services Assistant participates in the cataloging and processing of monographic and other physical library materials to go into the High Point University Library collections, including choice and modification of bibliographic records, assigning local holdings, shelving locations, and call numbers to optimize discovery.
This position will primarily assist with special projects preparing library collections for a move to the new library building but will persist after the building opens, assisting with daily work in the division.
This is a part-time position, working 15-20 hours a week. Work hours are flexible.Essential Functions
1)Cataloging, Classification & Metadata
  • Performs copy cataloging, including record creation and selection in OCLC; and classification including call number creation and modification using both Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress Classification schemes for main library collections as well as multiple satellite library locations.
  • Reclassifying materials from Dewey to Library of Congress Classification for placement in the library's Core Academic Collection.
  • Creating, formatting, and applying labels to library materials.
  • Physical processing of library materials in various formats.
  • Assists with metadata creation and maintenance for digital collections.

2)Collection Maintenance
  • Deselection and discarding duplicate, unused, outdated or damaged items.
  • Design, print, and apply dust jackets for book preservation.
  • Affixing and programming RFID tags to items in circulating collections.
  • Basic book repair for items in the Heritage Collection in off-site storage.
  • Participates in inventory projects, shelf reading, and book shifting, when required.
  • Completes special projects to optimize resource discovery and access across all library collections, including e-resource link checking and maintenance.

Some reference desk coverage will be required, generally one or two short desk shifts per week, answering patron questions both in-person and via library chat.
Reports to the Assistant Director & Head of Technical & Collection Services.
