Lab Technician (part-time, 28 hours/week)
Join the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology as a Lab Technician and play a vital role in supporting innovative research and hands-on teaching. In this role, you will manage the daily operations of the zebrafish research facility, oversee the confocal microscopy facility, and maintain departmental laboratory equipment. This position provides technical expertise, trains and supervises students and researchers, ensures the safe and efficient operation of specialized research facilities and equipment, and collaborates with faculty and staff to support a wide range of research and instructional activities.
What you'll do in this position:
  • Manage daily operations of the zebrafish research facility, ensuring compliance with animal care and research protocols
  • Monitor zebrafish health, water quality, and facility systems
  • Maintain zebrafish colonies, including feeding, breeding, and preserving genetic lines
  • Perform routine maintenance of aquaria, equipment, and facility inventory
  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise student employees
  • Mentor student researchers in zebrafish husbandry and laboratory procedures
  • Train and certify faculty, staff, and students to use confocal microscopy and other imaging equipment
  • Provide technical support, troubleshoot instrumentation, and coordinate equipment maintenance and repairs
  • Manage microscope scheduling, user access, and billing
  • Maintain departmental laboratory equipment, including ultra-low temperature freezers, and support departmental safety and research operations

What qualifies you for this role:
Required
  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Animal Science, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or a closely related life science field
  • One year of experience working in a laboratory, research, animal care, or related technical environment
  • Experience maintaining records and following laboratory safety and standard operating procedures

Preferred
  • Two or more years of experience supporting biological research in a laboratory setting
  • Experience with zebrafish husbandry, aquatic animal care, or animal research facilities
  • Experience operating, maintaining, or training users on confocal or other advanced microscopy systems
  • Experience supervising, training, or mentoring students or employees
  • Experience with laboratory inventory, purchasing, or equipment management

Typical Starting Pay: $31.25 to $40.50 an hour
