Description
Summary
The Head Men's Basketball Developmental Coach is responsible for leading, organizing, and managing the institution's developmental men's basketball program under the direction of the Head Men's Basketball Coach and Athletic Director. This position serves as the primary leader of player development, culture building, and preparation of student-athletes for advancement to the varsity program while supporting institutional goals of retention, eligibility and academic success.
Knowledge & Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
โ€ข Oversee all operations of the men's basketball development team.
โ€ข Design and implement daily practices, skill development plans, and player evaluation systems.
โ€ข Align developmental system, terminology, and schemes with the varsity men's basketball program.
โ€ข Coordinate with varsity staff on player assignments and roster movement.
โ€ข Monitor academic progress, eligibility, and student-athlete development.
โ€ข Support recruiting efforts in collaboration with varsity staff.
โ€ข Supervise assistant developmental coaches and delegate responsibilities.
โ€ข Organize team travel, scheduling, workouts, and off-season programming.
โ€ข Provide film breakdown, player evaluations, and performance analytics.
โ€ข Maintain compliance with NJCAA rules and institutional policies.
โ€ข Promote student retention, leadership development, and campus engagement.
Player Development & Coaching:
Lead in planning and conducting practices, workouts, and skill development sessions. Provide on-court instruction focused on fundamentals, position-specific skills, and team concepts. Support strength and conditioning initiatives in coordination with staff. Evaluate current student-athletes and contribute to individual development plans.
Recruiting & Talent Identification:
Identify and evaluate prospective student-athletes within a regional recruiting footprint. Build and maintain relationships with high school, AAU, prep coaches, families, and advisors. Assist with recruiting communications, outreach, and prospect tracking. Support organization of visits and recruiting-related events. Maintain accurate recruiting notes and databases.
Game Preparation & Support:
Assist in scouting reports, opponent analysis, and game planning. Contribute to film breakdown and performance evaluation. Support bench coaching responsibilities during varsity practices and games. Attend all varsity home games and assigned away contests.
Game Day Operations:
All developmental coaching staff are required to serve in a game day operations role for all home varsity men's basketball games.
Transportation & Travel Requirement:
If the Operations Coordinator, Operations Assistant, Athletic Director, or designated approved driver is unavailable, developmental coaching staff may be required to
provide transportation support utilizing approved college vehicles after completing reservation procedures and receiving institutional approval.
Program Support & Administration
Ensure compliance with NJCAA Division III and Region 10 rules and regulations. Assist in Monitoring academic progress and supporting retention efforts. Participate in program events including open houses, meetings, and orientation sessions. Represent the program professionally on campus and in the community.
Relationship Building & Program Growth
Develop and maintain strong relationships with coaches, programs, and community partners. Promote program culture, values, and standards through consistent engagement. Contribute to the long-term growth and competitiveness of the program.

Education Minimum: Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred in Sports Management, Education, or related fields.
Experience Minimum: 1-3 years of coaching, player development, or recruiting experience preferred, ideally within NJCAA, high school varsity, AAU, or collegiate basketball.
