Part-time Lead Basketball Instructor/Referee

Free Y membership!

The YMCA is seeking an energetic and knowledgeable Basketball Instructor to lead youth basketball programming and support league operations. This position will primarily lead the โ€œSkills, Drills, & 3v3โ€ program for grades 5โ€“8, provide substitute instruction for Introductory Basketball programs ages 5โ€“9, and serve as a site supervisor/referee during YMCA basketball leagues.

The ideal candidate has basketball experience, strong leadership skills, and a passion for creating a positive experience for youth athletes and families.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead basketball skill development sessions focused on dribbling, shooting, passing, defense, and game IQ.
  • Organize drills, stations, and 3v3 gameplay for middle school athletes
  • Substitute for instructional basketball classes for ages 5โ€“9 as needed
  • Site supervise and referee YMCA youth basketball league games
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and positive environment during classes and leagues
  • Teach sportsmanship, teamwork, effort, and confidence through basketball
  • Provide instruction and feedback that supports both beginner and experienced athletes
  • Communicate professionally with participants, parents, coaches, and YMCA staff
  • Serve as a positive role model for youth participants
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Previous basketball coaching, playing, or training experience required

  • Previous basketball playing, coaching, officiating, or instructional experience required
  • Strong understanding of basketball fundamentals and player development
  • Ability to lead groups with confidence, energy, and professionalism
  • Minimum age is 21.

Physical Abilities and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to actively participate in basketball activities including running, demonstrating drills, and standing for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift and move sports equipment up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to work in a gymnasium environment with moderate to loud noise levels

Hours can range between 3-7, weekdays or Saturday mornings from 8-1.

Salary: $16-$18.00 /hour
