Job SummaryUnder the direction of the site administrator or Athletic Director, plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the Royal High School Varsity Boys Baseball program. Provides leadership to ensure a safe, educational, and competitive program aligned with district standards and California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) requirements.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThis classification has primary responsibility for the operation and compliance of the Varsity Boys Baseball program. The Head Coach exercises program leadership and supervises Support Coaching Staff and student athletes. This role differs from Support Coaching Staff by holding full accountability for program design, athlete oversight, and regulatory compliance.
CompensationStipend per the District coaching salary schedule: $3,580-$4,771, based on demonstrated coaching experience. The stipend is paid in one installment upon completion of the season.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES• Plan, organize, and direct all aspects of the Varsity Boys Baseball program, including practices, games, and offseason activities as permitted
• Develop and implement a comprehensive program plan, including skill development, conditioning, and competition strategy
• Supervise and evaluate Support Coaching Staff; assign duties consistent with program needs
• Ensure proper supervision of student athletes at all times during practices, contests, travel, and related activities
• Enforce adherence to CIF bylaws, league rules, district policies, and site procedures
• Determine athlete selection, placement, and playing time consistent with program standards and district expectations
• Monitor and support student athlete academic eligibility and conduct
• Maintain communication with students, families, site administration, and athletic program leadership
• Ensure safe use, storage, and inventory of equipment and facilities
• Identify and report safety concerns, injuries, and incidents in accordance with district procedures
• Coordinate schedules, transportation needs, and game logistics with site administration
• Promote sportsmanship, equity, and appropriate student behavior
• Maintain required certifications and ensure Assistant Coaches meet district and CIF requirements
• Attend meetings, trainings, and events as required
Other Functions• Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSRequired at Time of Application (Screening Requirement)

Pre Employment RequirementValid First Aid & CPR certification, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications are required.
The coach must possess a current First Aid and CPR certification that meets American Red Cross (ARC) or American Heart Association (AHA) standards, or equivalent training aligned with ARC/AHA guidelines including an in-person, hands-on CPR skills assessment completed prior to the first day of coaching duties.
• Required under Cal. Educ. Code 49413 (training must be based on ARC/AHA equivalent standards).
• ARC guidance states that online only CPR without hands on skills testing does not meet certification requirements.
• AED certification shall be obtained and maintained in compliance with AB 310

Preferred Qualifications- Prior experience as a Varsity Boys BaseballCoach or Support Coaching Staff.
- Experience supervising student groups or leading athletic activities.
- Activity Supervisor Clearance Certificate (ASCC) if applicable.
- Relevant coaching certifications or safety-related training
Selection Priority (Education Code)In accordance with California Education Code 44919(b), temporary athletic coaching assignments must first be offered to qualified certificated teachers currently employed by the District. If no certificated employee accepts the assignment, the District may consider non-certificated (walk-on/classified) applicants who meet all requirements.
