Job Summary
The Helms Laboratory is seeking a motivated undergraduate student to assist with biomedical research investigating mechanisms of lung injury and repair. This position provides hands-on experience in a collaborative research environment and is ideal for students interested in biology, physiology, medicine, or biomedical research.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with preparation of laboratory reagents and stock solutions.
  • Maintain laboratory organization, inventory, and equipment.
  • Perform basic laboratory techniques including pipetting, solution preparation, and sample processing under supervision.
  • Assist with data entry, spreadsheet organization, and basic data analysis.
  • Support molecular biology, cell culture, histology, and microscopy experiments as training progresses.
  • Assist with animal colony maintenance and research procedures after appropriate training and IACUC approval.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks and comply with laboratory safety requirements.

Minimum Qualifications
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.
Preferences
  • Coursework in biology or chemistry.
  • Previous laboratory experience through coursework, volunteer work, or undergraduate research.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and basic data analysis.
  • Interest in molecular biology, physiology, or translational biomedical research.
  • Availability to work 10-20 hours per week during the academic year, with additional hours available during the summer.
