What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time barback?

To thrive as a Part Time Barback, you need strong organizational skills, physical stamina, and basic knowledge of bar operations, with most positions requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with POS systems, bar cleaning equipment, and inventory management tools is beneficial. Excellent teamwork, communication, and a proactive attitude help barbacks support bartenders and maintain smooth service. These skills and qualities ensure efficient bar operations, high customer satisfaction, and a positive work environment.

What are some common challenges that part time barbacks face during busy shifts, and how can they effectively manage them?

Part-time barbacks often encounter challenges such as keeping up with high demand during peak hours, restocking supplies quickly, and supporting bartenders while maintaining a clean and organized workspace. Effective time management and clear communication with bartenders and other staff are key to handling these pressures. Staying proactive—such as anticipating supply needs and learning the bar's layout—can help barbacks stay ahead during rush periods and contribute to a smooth, efficient work environment.

What is a part time barback?

Part time barbacks are support staff in bars or restaurants who assist bartenders by restocking supplies, cleaning, and maintaining the bar area, but work fewer hours than full-time employees. Their responsibilities often include replenishing ice, glassware, and garnishes, collecting empty glasses, and ensuring the bar runs smoothly during busy shifts. Part time barbacks typically work evenings, weekends, or special events, making the role ideal for those seeking flexible or supplemental work. This position can also serve as a stepping stone for advancing to a bartender role. Good communication skills, physical stamina, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are important for this job.

Job description

About Still Austin Whiskey Co
Still Austin is the first true grain-to-glass distillery to open in Austin since the end of Prohibition and one of the fastest-growing craft whiskey brands in the United States. As we expand into the Still Austin Quarter (SAQ), hospitality plays an increasingly central role in how guests experience our brand. Every team member - regardless of role - is a brand ambassador and an active participant in delivering exceptional, genuine hospitality.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Barback supports bar and service operations by maintaining product readiness, cleanliness, and organization while also actively engaging with guests and taking ownership of service needs when required. In the SAQ environment, Barbacks are guest-facing team members who are expected to step in, assist, and execute with confidence - whether restocking the bar, running food, answering guest questions, or fulfilling drink or food requests when appropriate.
This role is foundational to seamless service and embodies our belief that hospitality does not stop at job titles.
SUCCESS PROFILE
To be successful in this role, the Barback will:
• Take pride in delivering elevated hospitality, not just operational support
• Demonstrate ownership of the guest experience, especially when guests seek assistance
• Exhibit growing confidence in food, beverage, and spirits knowledge
• Anticipate needs and act proactively rather than redirecting guests
• Maintain exceptional standards of cleanliness, organization, and teamwork
• Thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment with flexibility and composure
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Guest Experience & Service Support
  • Greet and assist guests warmly, answering basic questions about the menu, food offerings, and beverages.
  • Exhibit confidence in the food and spirits menu, including the ability to describe dishes, drinks, and flavor profiles accurately.
  • Maintain awareness of potential allergens and communicate appropriately with guests and service staff.
  • Take ownership of guest requests when flagged down, including drink or food orders, rather than redirecting guests to another team member.
  • Accurately enter orders into the POS system when necessary and ensure proper delivery to guests.
  • Assist in running food and beverages to guests, ensuring correct presentation and timely service.

Bar Operations & Support
  • Stock and replenish all bar products including N/A beverages, alcoholic beverages, ice wells, garnishes, napkins, food items, and service supplies.
  • Wash, polish, and organize glassware, bar tools, and service equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness of bar areas, service stations, patio, and surrounding spaces using proper sanitation procedures.
  • Monitor bar stock levels and communicate shortages or needs proactively to bartenders or management.

Safety, Compliance & Teamwork
  • Recognize guests who may be visibly intoxicated and promptly notify bartenders or managers.
  • Adhere to all TABC, safety, and sanitation regulations at all times.
  • Foster positive working relationships through clear communication and teamwork across departments.
  • Support other teams and assist with events, opening/closing duties, and side work as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications
  • Must be available to work 10-12 hours per week
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented, fast-paced, guest-facing environment.
  • Comfort interacting with guests and stepping into service support as needed.
  • Strong attention to detail and cleanliness.
  • Ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure.
  • Availability to work days, nights, weekends, holidays, and events.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

Experience & Certifications
  • Minimum one (1) year of restaurant, bar, or hospitality experience preferred.
  • Must maintain or obtain TABC Certification and Texas Food Handler's Certification upon hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Stand and walk for extended periods (entire shift, often 6-8 hours).
  • Lifting or carrying up to 50lbs regularly.
  • Move quickly and safely in a fast-paced, crowded environment.
  • Tolerate heat and noise in bar areas, outdoor patio and production environments.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and reach to stock and retrieve supplies.
  • Use hands and arms to handle tools and equipment.
  • Maintain balance and coordination while carrying trays, bus tubs or cases.
