DESCRIPTION
The City of Hanford is seeking to fill two (2) Part-Time Historic Vehicle Operator vacancies in the Recreation and Community Services Department. The incumbent is responsible for operating a historic vehicle safely and transporting passengers on scheduled tours. This role combines safe driving with customer service, often serving as a guide by providing destination information and ensuring a comfortable journey. Incumbents may be required to be available at various times on weekdays, weekends, and on holidays.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives supervision from the Recreation Manager and the Recreation and Community Services Director.
EXAMPLE OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Safely operate a historic vehicle in compliance with all traffic laws and City of Hanford policies.
Transport passengers to designated locations on schedule.
Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
Assist passengers with boarding, seating, and exiting the vehicle.
Provide information about routes, landmarks, and tour details.
Handle unexpected situations, such as delays, road closures, or passenger concerns.
Process transactions and payments, ensuring accurate cash handling, change distribution, and register reconciliation.
Ensure passenger safety and enforce onboard rules.
Provide excellent customer service and represent the City of Hanford in a professional and welcoming manner.
Maintain the vehicle's cleanliness and basic upkeep.
May perform basic vehicle inspections and report mechanical or technical issues to the Fleet Department.
Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Safe driving practices and traffic laws.
Principles of customer service and public interaction.
Local roads, traffic patterns, historical landmarks, and neighborhoods.
Basic vehicle inspection and safety procedures.
Basic mechanical systems and equipment operation.
Ability to:
Operate a historic passenger vehicle safely and efficiently.
Communicate effectively with passengers and the public.
Handle unexpected situations calmly and professionally.
Assist passengers with boarding and exiting the vehicle.
Work independently and exercise sound judgment.
Maintain accurate records and process transactions.
Work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Experience and Education
Any combination of experience, training, and education that provides the required knowledge and abilities qualifies. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Experience:
One (1) year of customer service, transportation, tour operations, hospitality, or related experience involving direct interaction with the public.
Education:
Possession of a High School Diploma, or G.E.D.
Additional Requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
A satisfactory driving record is required.
License and Certificate
Possession of an appropriate California Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with passenger endorsement by time of appointment.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work evenings, weekends, and holidays during various weather seasons.
Sit and drive for extended periods.
Interact with diverse groups of passengers
Positions in this class typically require good vision, hearing, and physical stamina.
Periods of sitting, standing, and assisting passengers board and exit the vehicle.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The application screening will involve a competitive evaluation of relevant education, training, and work experience, followed by a written examination and/or an interview before an Oral Board to identify the most qualified candidates.Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee applicants an interview, and the screening committee's decision is final. Candidates deemed eligible for appointment to the position will be placed on the City's Certified Eligibility List. Applicants will receive written notification regarding the results of all phases of the recruitment process leading up to the establishment of the Eligibility List, if applicable.
Paid Sick Leave
Employees are eligible to accrue paid sick leave beginning with their first day of employment. Employees accrue paid sick leave at the rate of one (1) hour for every thirty (30) hours of work, subject to the maximum annual benefit of forty (40) hours. Unused accrued paid sick leave hours will carry over from one year to the next.
457 Deferred Compensation Plan
Part-Time employees are enrolled in a 457 deferred compensation retirement plan ("PTS Plan") and will contribute 7.5% of their salary. The City is contracted with Mission Square Retirement.
