Summary
Under general direction, the vehicle operator will provide transportation services for the general public in a safe reliable manner. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: safely operating and properly maneuvering various types of vehicles, transporting demand-response passengers, providing good customer service, and performing additional tasks as assigned.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Job Duties
Operates public transit vehicles to provide safe and timely transportation for the general public and special populations on the City's demand-response and/or trolley service.
Ensures that the highest quality of service is delivered to customers.
Gives attention to safety and security issues during the performance of job duties.
Demonstrates use of good mature judgment while operating City vehicles.
Complies with the Transit Operator's Handbook, as well as all federal, state and local laws pertaining to the operation of buses, traffic and safety.
Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure bus and equipment are in safe and proper working condition.
Effectively utilizes tablets to follow routes and ensure on-time performance.
Assists customers in a friendly, courteous and helpful manner.
Shows special sensitivity to the needs of the elderly and persons with disabilities.
Assists persons with mobility devices to board and alight from the vehicle, and to secure their mobility devices inside the vehicle.
Maintains contact with dispatcher, supervisors, and other office staff by two-way radio; reports detours, incidents, accidents, etc., immediately per established procedures.
Completes all required paperwork and reports (e.g., pre-trip and post-trip maintenance forms, etc.).
Demonstrates proper care of bus, including cleanliness, checking fluid levels, etc.
Monitors condition of vehicles and ensure proper maintenance and upkeep.
Communicates and establishes positive relationship with customers.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School or G.E.D.
One year of experience operating a commercial vehicle preferred.
Insurance requires minimum age of 21.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Class C Driver's License and satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
CDL not required, but preferred.
CPR Certification desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrates extensive knowledge of operating vehicles, including pre-trip inspection of equipment, submission of daily trip summaries/reports, and while working with the public.
Demonstrates knowledge of methods, systems, equipment, and materials to be used, as well as high levels of proficiency in operating vehicles in a safe, dependable, efficient and timely manner; must have interpersonal skills to courteously and diplomatically communicate with all levels of staff and the general public.
Ability to read and write; to complete required reports and records; to operate two-way transit radio system in accordance with internal operating procedures and the F.C.C.
Knowledge of the geography of the Gainesville and Hall County including major streets and landmarks.
Knowledge of safe driving techniques.
Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.
Ability to provide assistance in boarding and disembarking from vans.
MUST have a personal reliable vehicle to get to work.
Supplemental Information
This position is classified as safety-sensitive. Incumbent will be subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
This safety-sensitive position is governed by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol testing regulations.
Part-time operators maximum work hours cannot exceed 58 hours per pay period. Operators will be required to work various shifts; morning, evening, and night depending on the transit system's needs. Specific shifts or hours are not guaranteed.
