Job description

Provides for the safety of students and staff:
  • Exercises greatest care at all times in transportation of school children;
  • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, employees, equipment and property;
  • Reports all student injuries, accidents, illnesses and discipline problems to the appropriate authority immediately or as soon as reasonably possible;
  • Wears seat belt assembly while driving;
  • Instructs students who ride about rider safety;
  • Ensures passengers use appropriate restraints/seatbelts;
  • Operates lifts in a safe and proper manner according to operating procedures, following all provision of Pupil Transportation regulations of the State Board of Education and terms of the School Bus Driver Handbook;
  • Operates vehicle at a safe speed not to exceed posted speed limits;
  • Keeps a copy of route schedule in vehicle, including time vehicle starts, time it leaves each point at which students are taken on, time of arrival, vehicle odometer reading at beginning of route where first student is picked up;
  • Operates vehicle in accordance with route schedule and designated stops;
  • Inspects, verifies and monitors the operational condition and safety of vehicle accessories and assigns buses on a daily basis;
  • Submits reports of vehicle condition, route time and mileage, passenger roster, maintenance needs, time keeping and abnormal occurrences as required.
Performs related duties as assigned:
  • Periodically participates in mandated meetings and in-service programs during traditional and non-traditional workdays and work hours as required by ODBES;
  • Lifts and moves heavy and/or bulky objects or children weighing up to 100 lbs.;
  • Maintains cleanliness of windows and interior of bus on a daily basis;
  • Washes bus exterior, fueling and providing minor service to vehicles;
  • Maintains general cleanliness of transportation depots if necessary.
Assists maintenance department:
  • Performs labor and custodial duties (e.g., shovels snow, loads and unloads trucks, mows grass, cuts weeds, hauls trash, moves furniture, sets up chairs, tables, stages and platforms, cleans and dusts, sweeps, mops and waxes floors and cleans windows and walls).

Qualifications
Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication & division & reading, writing & speaking English; 3 mos. trg. or 3 mos. exp. operating passenger bus or van; valid Commercial Driver License with appropriate endorsement for size & type of motorized equipment operated as regulated by Sections 4506.01 & 4506.12 of Revised Code.
