Minimum Requirements
  • Associate degree in Automotive Systems Technology or a closely related field; or equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience.
  • Five years of recent, relevant work experience in automotive service, repair, diagnostics, or related automotive systems.
  • Industry-recognized certifications such as ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) in one or more areas (or ability to obtain within one year of hire).
  • Demonstrated proficiency with automotive tools, equipment, diagnostic technology, and safety practices.
  • Ability to plan and deliver hands-on instruction in both classroom and lab/shop settings.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage and support students.
  • Ability to maintain required documentation, records, and reports with accuracy.
  • Commitment to safety, professionalism, and teaching excellence.
  • Ability to perform the physical duties required in an automotive lab, including standing for extended periods, lifting moderate weight, and operating equipment.

Primary Functions of Position
Under general supervision, the part-time Automotive Systems Technology Instructor will deliver instruction in a variety of learning environments, including classroom, shop, and hands-on lab settings. This position is responsible for assessing student learning, monitoring skill development, and ensuring safe and effective training practices. Instructional topics may include engine repair, electrical and electronic systems, steering and suspension, brake systems, drivetrains, HVAC, diagnostics, and other related areas within automotive technology.
Essential Duties:
  • Prepare lesson plans, course overviews, and syllabi aligned with program competencies and industry standards.
  • Plan and supervise hands-on lab projects that provide practical automotive repair and diagnostic experience.
  • Deliver effective instruction using varied teaching methods to help students develop essential automotive service and repair skills.
  • Evaluate student learning and skill progression; provide timely, constructive feedback.
  • Maintain current course documents, including syllabi, that reflect expected learning outcomes and course requirements.
  • Keep accurate and complete records, including attendance, grades, evaluations, and required reports, submitted in accordance with college deadlines.
  • Maintain instructional equipment, ensure proper storage of tools and supplies, and monitor inventory.
  • Ensure all instructional and lab areas comply with safety procedures and guidelines; continuously monitor shop activity for safe practices.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of classroom, shop, and lab environments.
  • Perform instructional duties that may require standing, walking, bending, lifting, carrying materials, operating automotive equipment, and using tools with manual dexterity for extended periods.
  • Demonstrate effective visual and auditory abilities necessary for instruction, equipment operation, communication, and multitasking in active lab environments.
  • Work effectively in collaborative settings and maintain professionalism in both classroom and lab environments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission, goals, and initiatives of the College.
