Lake Superior Academy is hiring Part Time After-school Care. 18 hours per week Monday - Thursday 3:00 P.M. - 5:30 P.M. and Fridays from 11:00 A.M. - 5:30 P.M.
Lake Superior Academy located in Sault Ste Marie is a tuition free public school academy serving children in grades K-5th. Our vision is to help each student develop a happy heart, an eagerness to learn and a strong foundation for success. We employ instructional methods that foster creativity, exploration, and strong problem-solving skills while also ensuring accountability for student progress.
Job Summary
The After School Child Care Staff is responsible for providing a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment for students participating in the school's before and after school child care program. This part-time position 18 hours per week) supervises children, facilitates age-appropriate activities, and supports students' social, emotional, and physical well-being while maintaining a positive and inclusive atmosphere. The After School Child Care Staff works collaboratively with school staff and families to ensure a high-quality child care experience.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties:
  • Supervise students participating in the before and after school child care program, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
  • Plan and facilitate age-appropriate recreational, educational, and enrichment activities that promote creativity, teamwork, and positive social interaction.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment where students feel respected and supported.
  • Monitor student behavior and reinforce positive behavior expectations using established program and school guidelines.
  • Assist students with homework and provide academic support as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and ensure students are released only to authorized individuals.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student participation, behavior, and program updates.
  • Prepare, organize, and clean activity areas before and after program operations.
  • Ensure program materials, equipment, and supplies are maintained and used safely.
  • Respond appropriately to student illnesses, injuries, emergencies, and behavioral concerns in accordance with school policies.
  • Collaborate with school staff and program coordinators to support student success and maintain program quality.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and required training.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA and school policies.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.

Cognitive Demands:
  • Supervise multiple students in a structured after school environment.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and engaging program for students.
  • Exercise sound judgment when responding to student needs, conflicts, and emergencies.
  • Effectively communicate with students, parents, and school staff.
  • Manage multiple tasks while maintaining a positive and supportive environment.
  • Adapt activities and supervision strategies to meet the developmental needs of students.
  • Participate in continuous professional development.

Physical Demands:
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and move throughout indoor and outdoor activity areas.
  • Occasionally lift or carry materials and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Actively participate in indoor and outdoor recreational activities with students.
  • Supervise students during transitions, playground activities, and other program events.
  • Withstand varying weather conditions during outdoor supervision.
  • Withstand moderate to high noise levels in program and school environments.
  • Be able to perform first aid/CPR if necessary.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree or college coursework in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Education, Recreation, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience working with school-age children in a child care, educational, recreational, or youth program setting preferred.
  • Strong understanding of child development and positive behavior management techniques.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to create engaging activities that promote student learning, creativity, and social development.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification preferred or willingness to obtain if required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism in all interactions.
  • Ability to meet all applicable state, district, and school employment requirements, including successful completion of required background checks.
