How much do part time accounting consulting jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for part time accounting consulting in the United States is $47.96, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $33.89 and $59.86 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is part-time accounting consulting?

Part-time accounting consulting involves providing financial expertise and accounting services to businesses or individuals on a flexible, non-full-time basis. Consultants assist with tasks such as bookkeeping, preparing financial statements, tax planning, and compliance, but work only for a set number of hours per week or month. This arrangement is ideal for companies that need specialized accounting help without hiring a full-time employee. Part-time consultants often work with multiple clients and can offer strategic advice tailored to each client's needs.

Can you make $500,000 a year as an accountant?

Part-time accounting consulting roles typically do not generate $500,000 annually due to limited hours and project scope. Achieving such income usually requires senior-level positions, extensive experience, specialized skills, or owning a successful accounting firm, often involving full-time commitment and high-value clients.

Can you work part-time as a consultant?

Part-time accounting consultants can work flexible hours, often balancing multiple clients or projects. Many consulting roles allow for part-time schedules, especially if the work involves project-based tasks or remote work, and typically require relevant certifications and accounting skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Accounting Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Accounting Consultant, you need a solid background in accounting principles, financial analysis, and often a relevant degree such as a CPA or equivalent certification. Proficiency in accounting software like QuickBooks, Excel, and familiarity with tax preparation or ERP systems is commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and time management skills help you effectively serve clients and manage multiple projects. These abilities are crucial for delivering accurate, timely advice and maintaining client trust in a flexible, part-time role.

Can you work in consulting with an accounting degree?

Yes, a degree in accounting can qualify you for consulting roles in financial and accounting advisory services. These roles often require strong analytical skills, knowledge of accounting principles, and proficiency with tools like Excel or accounting software. Additional certifications such as CPA or CMA can enhance job prospects in consulting positions.

Why are CPAs declining?

The decline in CPAs is often due to increased automation of accounting tasks through software, which reduces the demand for traditional accounting roles. Additionally, some professionals pursue alternative certifications or roles in financial analysis and consulting, leading to shifts in the accounting workforce.

What are the typical challenges faced by part-time accounting consultants when managing multiple clients?

Part-time accounting consultants often work with several clients simultaneously, which can present challenges in balancing differing schedules, deadlines, and accounting systems. Effective time management and clear communication are essential to ensure each client's needs are met without compromising the quality of work. Consultants must also stay updated on diverse industry regulations and adapt quickly to each client's unique processes, making organizational skills and flexibility crucial for success.
