What is a paralegal or legal assistant?

Paralegals or legal assistants are professionals who assist lawyers by performing a variety of tasks to support legal work. Their duties often include conducting legal research, drafting documents, organizing files, and helping prepare for trials. While they are not licensed to practice law, their work is essential to the efficient functioning of law offices and legal departments. Paralegals must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a good understanding of legal concepts and procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a paralegal or legal assistant?

To thrive as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant, you need a strong understanding of legal terminology, research methods, and document preparation, often supported by a paralegal certificate or associate degree. Familiarity with legal research databases (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), case management software, and proficiency in Microsoft Office are important technical skills. Attention to detail, organizational abilities, and effective written and verbal communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for efficiently supporting attorneys, ensuring accuracy, and facilitating smooth legal processes within law firms or corporate legal departments.
