Job description

Paralegal Intern

Position Type: Part-Time Internship (Unpaid)
Location: Minneapolis, MN (In-Person)
Hours: 12–15 hours per week
Internship Period: Fall Semester 2026 (approximately September 1–December 15, 2026)

Introduction

Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA) is seeking a part-time Paralegal Intern to join the Support Staff team in our Minneapolis office for the Fall 2026 semester. This internship provides students with hands-on experience in a legal services environment, supporting attorneys, paralegals, and legal support professionals who serve low-income clients throughout Minnesota. The internship is designed to provide meaningful exposure to litigation support, legal document preparation, file management, and court procedures while contributing to MMLA's mission of advancing equal justice.

The internship is conducted fully in person at MMLA's downtown Minneapolis office. Hours are generally flexible during regular business hours: Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

What's in it for you?

  • Gain hands-on experience supporting attorneys, paralegals, and advocates in a civil legal services environment.

  • Learn about court procedures, legal document preparation, service requirements, and case management systems.

  • Receive mentorship from experienced legal professionals.

  • Develop professional skills in legal writing, proofreading, organization, and client service.

  • Gain exposure to a variety of civil legal matters and public interest law.

  • Build experience relevant to future careers in law, public service, advocacy, or nonprofit work.

Why MMLA?

  • We're not just ticking boxes. We're genuinely committed to diversity. Bring your unique identity, experiences, and perspectives—we want them all!

  • Our mission? Equal justice for all. In your cover letter, tell us how your background can amplify this cause. Let's change lives together.

  • Discrimination and harassment have no place here. We're building a respectful, supportive workplace where everyone thrives.

  • Diversity, equity and inclusion are core values for Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid, and it is critical that we incorporate these values into all aspects of our work. We recognize the particular and highly detrimental impact of racism—and of Minnesota's racial disparities—on MMLA's clients and staff. We therefore devote special attention to issues of racial justice.

About Our Team

The Minneapolis Support Staff team is composed of paralegals and other legal professionals who provide administrative, legal, and litigation support to more than 75 case handlers and other MMLA staff. Team members work on a wide variety of civil legal matters, creating opportunities to gain broad exposure to legal services work. The team operates under a modified pool model in which work requests are assigned and completed collaboratively while also supporting longer-term cases and projects.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Apply the principles of MMLA's Racial Justice Values Statement in all interactions.

  • Draft, proofread, and file legal documents in district, appellate, and federal courts under supervision.

  • Serve legal documents through mail, email, and electronic service systems.

  • Arrange for personal service of documents when necessary.

  • Organize, prepare, and label exhibits for litigation matters.

  • Draft, proofread, and distribute correspondence to clients and other parties.

  • Maintain and organize physical and electronic client files.

  • Collect records from government agencies, including regulatory services and law enforcement agencies, as needed.

  • Assist with scanning, copying, records management, and other administrative projects.

  • Assist staff with processing incoming and outgoing mail as needed.

  • Participate in additional legal projects, training opportunities, and job-shadowing experiences as available.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

Knowledge

  • Basic understanding of legal studies, public service, or paralegal concepts gained through coursework or training.

  • Familiarity with general office procedures and technology.

Skills

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong proofreading, formatting, and editing skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, Excel, OneDrive, and SharePoint.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Abilities

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize projects while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

  • Ability to learn new technologies, software systems, and legal processes.

Other Characteristics

  • Interest in nonprofit work, civil legal services, and serving low-income and vulnerable populations.

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice.

  • Self-motivated, dependable, and eager to learn.

Required Qualifications

  • Some college experience with a legal or pre-law concentration.

  • Interest in and commitment to nonprofit work, civil legal services, or serving low-income and vulnerable populations.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using PDF editing software such as Foxit PDF Editor or Adobe Acrobat.

  • Experience using LegalServer or a similar case management system.

  • Prior office, legal, volunteer, customer service, or administrative experience.

  • Work, volunteer, or lived experience with diverse economic, social, and cultural communities.
