What is the difference between Panel Assembly vs Electrical Assembler?

AspectPanel AssemblyElectrical Assembler
CredentialsHigh school diploma, technical trainingHigh school diploma, technical training
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, assembly linesManufacturing facilities, assembly lines
Industry UsageElectronics, control panels, industrial equipmentElectronics, wiring, circuit boards
Job FocusAssembling panels with components and wiringWiring and assembling electrical components

Panel Assemblers primarily focus on constructing entire control panels and enclosures, while Electrical Assemblers concentrate on wiring and assembling individual electrical components. Both roles require similar skills and work environments, but their scope of work differs in complexity and focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a panel assembler?

To thrive as a Panel Assembler, you need strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to read and interpret technical drawings or blueprints, often supported by a high school diploma or technical certification. Familiarity with hand and power tools, soldering equipment, and sometimes programmable logic controllers (PLCs) is typically required. Good teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively and adapt to production demands. These skills ensure precise assembly, minimize errors, and support efficient manufacturing processes.

What is panel assembly?

Panel assembly is the process of constructing and wiring electrical control panels or enclosures that house various electrical components, such as switches, circuit breakers, relays, and wiring. Assemblers follow technical drawings and schematics to correctly place and connect each component. The finished panels are used to control and distribute electrical power in industrial, commercial, or residential settings. Attention to detail and adherence to safety standards are crucial in this role.

What are some common challenges faced in panel assembly roles, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in panel assembly is ensuring accuracy and consistency when wiring and connecting various components, as even small errors can affect the panel's performance. Assembling complex panels may also involve interpreting detailed schematics, which requires strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills. To address these challenges, many employers provide thorough training, encourage teamwork, and implement quality control checks throughout the assembly process. Leveraging these resources and maintaining open communication with team members can help panel assemblers maintain high standards and resolve issues efficiently.

About this Role

ย On-Site

This role sits at the intersection of engineering and business impact. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, Applications & Automation, you will be responsible for both defining what we build and ensuring it is successfully executed.

Approximately half of your time will be spent on quoting, estimating, and scope development, translating customer needs into well-defined, technically sound, and commercially viable solutions. The other half will focus on mechanical engineering design and execution, owning those solutions through detailed design, build, and customer acceptance.

This is a high-ownership role where you are expected to stand behind your numbers and your designs. You will influence project direction early, make critical technical and financial decisions, and carry that accountability through the full lifecycle. This is not a handoff environment, what you quote, you help deliver.

What You'll Do

Applications Engineering, Quoting & Estimating (50%)

  • Lead concept development, feasibility analysis, and system architecture for custom automation solutionsย
  • Develop detailed scopes of work aligned to customer requirements and technical constraintsย
  • Prepare accurate cost estimates (materials, labor, fabrication, assembly, engineering hours)ย
  • Identify technical risks, assumptions, and gaps in proposalsย
  • Partner with sales and leadership to deliver competitive, technically sound solutionsย
  • Ensure continuity by owning and executing projects you quoteย

Mechanical Engineering Expertise & Execution (50%)

  • Lead mechanical design of custom automation equipment (concept through release)ย
  • Define system architecture and design strategy across projectsย
  • Perform/review advanced engineering calculations (stress, motion, tolerance, thermal)ย
  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, safety, and manufacturabilityย
  • Provide technical expertise and mentorship to engineersย

Project Ownership & Delivery

  • Own scope, risk, cost, and execution across the full project lifecycleย
  • Identify and resolve design, manufacturability, and performance issuesย
  • Support build, assembly, debugging, and system integration on the floorย
  • Drive change management and cost/scope controlย

Customer & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Lead customer design reviews and technical discussionsย
  • Serve as primary technical point of contactย
  • Collaborate with controls engineering, electrical, manufacturing, and project management teamsย
  • Support FAT, SAT, installation, and post-delivery troubleshootingย

Continuous Improvement & Standards

  • Improve quoting accuracy, design standards, and engineering processesย
  • Develop technical documentation and best practicesย
  • Drive improvements in cost, reliability, and performanceย

Requirements

What We're Looking Forย

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experienceย
  • 7-10+ years of experience in custom automation, special machinery, or engineered-to-order equipmentย
  • Demonstrated experience in applications engineering, quoting, or estimatingย
  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD softwareย
  • Strong understanding of machine design and mechanical systemsย
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication methodsย
  • Experience with material selection and cost driversย
  • Proven ability to develop accurate cost estimates and technical scopesย
  • Experience leading projects and mentoring engineersย
  • Hands-on experience supporting builds, debugging, and resolving real-world issuesย
  • Background in robotics, motion control, pneumatics, or mechatronicsย
  • Strong decision-making skills with a high level of accountability and ownershipย
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
