What is a paleontology graduate student?

Paleontology graduate students are individuals enrolled in advanced degree programs (usually Master's or PhD) who study the history of life on Earth through fossils and ancient biological remains. Their work involves research, fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and coursework focused on topics like evolution, extinct organisms, and Earth's geological history. These students often participate in excavations, analyze fossil specimens, and collaborate with faculty on academic publications. Their training prepares them for careers in research, education, museums, or environmental consulting.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a paleontology graduate student?

To thrive as a Paleontology Graduate Student, you need a solid background in geology, biology, and paleontological methods, typically demonstrated by an undergraduate degree in a related field. Familiarity with analytical tools such as GIS software, microscopy, fossil preparation techniques, and data analysis programs is important. Strong research, critical thinking, and communication skills help you excel in presenting findings and collaborating with peers and faculty. These skills are crucial for conducting rigorous scientific research, publishing results, and advancing in academic or professional paleontology careers.
