Job description

Job Title: SolidWorks Designer

Job Description

The SolidWorks Designer creates detailed mechanical designs and production-ready drawings for structural steel, weldments, and complex machine components. This role uses SolidWorks to develop 3D models, assemblies, and bills of materials while collaborating closely with engineering and manufacturing teams. The designer supports projects from concept through production, ensuring designs are accurate, manufacturable, and aligned with standard engineering department processes.

Responsibilities

  • Create detailed 3D models and assemblies in SolidWorks for structural steel, weldments, mounts, pumps, sheet metal, and machine components.
  • Develop clear and accurate engineering drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, and fabrication details suitable for manufacturing and fabrication teams.
  • Build and maintain complete and accurate bills of materials (BOMs) in accordance with standard engineering department processes.
  • Apply knowledge of weldments and heavy structural steel components to design robust and reliable structures for demanding applications, including oil and gas environments.
  • Use SolidWorks and related tools to design mechanical systems, including mounting structures, pump layouts, and machine designs.
  • Perform hand calculations in a production environment to support design decisions and verify structural integrity when needed.
  • Collaborate with engineers, drafters, and shop personnel to clarify design intent and resolve design or fabrication issues.
  • Incorporate feedback from the production and assembly floor to improve designs for manufacturability and ease of assembly.
  • Review and update existing designs and drawings to reflect engineering changes and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Work with a high level of intensity and ownership, taking design input and driving it through to complete, production-ready deliverables.
  • Support finite element analysis (FEA) efforts by preparing appropriate models and incorporating results into design improvements.
  • Ensure all design work aligns with internal standards, best practices, and applicable industry expectations.
  • Visit the machine shop, welding, and painting areas as needed to verify fit, function, and alignment of designs with real-world conditions.

Essential Skills

  • Strong proficiency with SolidWorks, including 3D modeling, assemblies, and detailed drafting.
  • Hands-on experience designing weldments and heavy structural steel components.
  • Ability to create and manage accurate bills of materials (BOMs) in an engineering environment.
  • Understanding of standard engineering department processes and documentation practices.
  • Mechanical design experience with structural steel, mount design, pump design, sheet metal, and machine design.
  • Experience producing detailed engineering drawings suitable for fabrication and machining.
  • Capability to perform hand calculations in a production environment to support design decisions.
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) concepts and their application to mechanical design.
  • Strong 3D modeling and drafting skills with attention to detail and manufacturability.
  • Demonstrated ability to take design input and independently drive work to completion with a high level of intensity and ownership.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in or supporting the oil and gas industry.
  • Exposure to manufacturing environments such as machine shops, welding, and painting operations.
  • mechanical engineering, drafting, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams including engineering, production, and quality.
  • Ability to interpret and apply feedback from shop floor personnel to improve design quality and practicality.
  • Comfort working with heavy structural steel components and large welded assemblies.

Work Environment

The role operates within a blue-collar, production-oriented environment that includes a machine shop, welding areas, and painting operations. The primary work location for the design team is an office setting where SolidWorks and other engineering tools are used to create models, assemblies, and drawings. The production and assembly floor is a non–air-conditioned area, and the designer will periodically go out to the shop to review parts, verify fit and function, and collaborate with shop personnel. The environment emphasizes practical, hands-on collaboration between design and manufacturing, with exposure to typical fabrication activities such as machining, welding, and painting
