Job Title: Aircraft Painter

Job Description

This role focuses on performing high-quality aircraft painting and surface preparation in a regulated maintenance environment. You will research and interpret technical data, prepare aircraft surfaces, mix and apply coatings, and ensure all work complies with maintenance manuals, aviation regulations, and internal policies. The position also involves equipment maintenance, shop housekeeping, and occasionally stepping into lead responsibilities when needed.

Responsibilities

• Research and interpret technical data, maintenance manuals, and applicable regulations to plan and perform aircraft painting tasks accurately.
• Clean and sand aircraft surfaces and apply appropriate chemical solutions to prepare and condition surfaces prior to painting.
• Mix and thin paints and other coatings to specified colors and consistencies using standard formulas and color charts.
• Mask and cover surfaces that should not be painted, ensuring clean and precise paint lines.
• Spray primers, protective coatings, decorative finishes, and topcoats such as paint, lacquer, sealer, or enamel onto prepared aircraft surfaces using spray equipment.
• Strip existing paint, markings, insignias, symbols, designs, and other aircraft graphics according to blueprints or specifications using stencils, patterns, measuring instruments, brushes, or spray equipment.
• Regulate and monitor controls on curing and drying equipment to ensure proper adhesion and finish quality of paint and coatings.
• Set up and position portable ventilators, exhaust units, ladders, stands, lifts, and scaffolding before painting operations to ensure safe and efficient access.
• Operate lifting and moving devices to safely move materials, equipment, and access platforms around the aircraft.
• Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on company painting equipment, tools, and related machinery, and maintain a clean and orderly shop environment.
• Ensure all required training is documented accurately on training records and obtain appropriate signatures from leadership as needed.
• Perform the duties of the Lead Painter in their absence, supporting workflow coordination and quality standards.
• Comply with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements, including proper use of protective equipment and adherence to facility procedures.
• Support a contract-to-hire arrangement by demonstrating strong performance, safe work practices, and a positive attitude toward team collaboration.
• Work overtime on an as-needed basis to meet operational and project deadlines.

Essential Skills

• At least 5 years of aircraft painting or closely related painting experience.
• Demonstrated experience with paint preparation, including cleaning, sanding, and surface conditioning.
• Proficiency using paint spray guns and related spray painting equipment for primers, sealers, and finish coats.
• Hands-on experience with masking techniques for complex surfaces, designs, and aircraft markings.
• Ability to mix and thin paints and coatings to specified color, viscosity, and consistency using standard formulas and color charts.
• Capability to read and follow blueprints, specifications, and technical documents related to aircraft painting and markings.
• Knowledge of proper setup and operation of ventilators, exhaust units, and other ventilation equipment used in painting operations.
• Skill in operating lifting and moving devices, such as stands, lifts, and related equipment, to access various aircraft areas safely.
• Strong attention to detail and quality, ensuring consistent finish, coverage, and adherence to technical requirements.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and frequently walk, bend, stoop, squat, reach above shoulder level, and crouch.
• Ability to occasionally kneel, balance, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for precise painting and masking work.
• Corrected vision and hearing within normal range to safely perform tasks and respond to instructions.
• Ownership and use of a basic set of tools suitable for aircraft painting and related tasks.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience painting commercial aircraft, including narrow and wide body platforms.
• Familiarity with 14 CFR Part 145 repair station environments and associated procedures.
• Comfort working with materials and chemicals identified on Safety Data Sheets in a controlled environment.
• Experience performing light maintenance and troubleshooting on painting equipment and shop tools.
• Ability to document training and work activities accurately and clearly.
• Capability and willingness to step into lead responsibilities when required.
• Strong teamwork, communication, and reliability in a fast-paced maintenance setting.
• Adaptability to contract-to-hire arrangements, with performance and attitude influencing conversion timeline.

Work Environment

This position operates on a first shift schedule, typically from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with overtime available on an as-needed basis. Work takes place across the facility, including hangar and shop areas, and may involve exposure to high-intensity noise levels, extreme temperature changes, and moving machinery. The role requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, squatting, reaching above shoulder level, and crouching, with occasional kneeling, balancing, and lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds. You regularly use spray painting equipment, power tools, mixing equipment, measuring instruments, brushes, ladders, stands, lifts, ventilators, exhaust units, and scaffolding. Safety is a core focus, and you use protective equipment such as goggles, safety glasses, face shields, ear protection, aprons, gloves, respirators, dust masks, safety harnesses, and protective clothing to perform your work safely in accordance with established procedures.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Marana, AZ.

The pay range for this position is $39.12 - $39.12/hr.
