What is a paint coating job?

Paint coating jobs involve applying protective or decorative coatings to surfaces such as metal, wood, or concrete. Workers in this field use a variety of techniques, including spraying, brushing, or dipping, to ensure surfaces are evenly coated and meet quality standards. These jobs are common in industries like automotive, construction, and manufacturing, where protecting materials from corrosion, weather, or wear is essential. Paint coating professionals must understand surface preparation, application methods, and safety procedures. Attention to detail and knowledge of coating materials are important for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a paint coating technician?

To thrive as a Paint Coating Technician, you need knowledge of surface preparation, paint application techniques, and safety protocols, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant trade certification. Familiarity with spray guns, mixing equipment, protective gear, and industry standards like OSHA regulations is typically required. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and strong problem-solving skills help technicians ensure high-quality finishes and adapt to various surfaces and conditions. These skills and qualities are essential for producing durable, consistent results while maintaining safety and efficiency in industrial or commercial environments.

What are some common challenges faced by paint coating professionals on a daily basis?

Paint coating professionals often encounter challenges such as ensuring consistent application quality across different surfaces, managing environmental factors like temperature and humidity, and adhering to strict safety and environmental regulations. Working with various substrates may require specialized preparation and knowledge of different coating materials. Additionally, professionals must frequently coordinate with other team members, such as quality inspectors and project managers, to meet project deadlines and client specifications.

You will take ownership of opportunities from bid invitation through project turnover, working closely with leadership, field operations, and project coordination teams. This is an opportunity to join an established company where your work will be visible, your ideas will be valued, and you will have room to grow into broader responsibilities over time.

What You Will Do

  • Review project drawings, specifications, addenda, and bid requirements.
  • Complete detailed takeoffs and prepare accurate labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor estimates.
  • Develop competitive bids for commercial interior and exterior painting projects.
  • Estimate specialty scopes such as epoxy flooring, concrete densifiers, sealers, high-performance coatings, wall coverings, and related finishes.
  • Identify access, equipment, scheduling, and production considerations that may affect pricing or execution.
  • Manage multiple bids, deadlines, and priorities simultaneously.
  • Coordinate with field leaders and subject-matter experts when additional operational input is needed.
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, virtual coordination meetings, and occasional site visits.
  • Assist with project turnover after award by organizing scope details, assumptions, exclusions, and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain communication with customers and general contractors throughout the estimating and transition process.
  • Support profitable growth by evaluating risk, protecting margin, and identifying opportunities for value engineering.

Required Qualifications

  • Three or more years of experience in commercial estimating, construction estimating, or a closely related role.
  • Experience reading commercial construction plans, specifications, and bid documents.
  • Working knowledge of estimating principles, labor production, materials, equipment, and project costs.
  • Ability to prepare organized, accurate, and complete estimates.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with office, field, and leadership teams.
  • Willingness to attend occasional project meetings and site visits throughout the Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, and surrounding regional market.
  • Proficiency with estimating software or the ability to learn PaintWorx systems quickly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Commercial painting or specialty-coatings estimating experience.
  • Proficiency with PlanSwift.
  • Experience working with Procore or a similar construction-management platform.
  • Experience estimating epoxy flooring, concrete densifiers, sealers, wall coverings, or high-performance coating systems.
  • Familiarity with mission-critical, data-center, airport, healthcare, education, government, retail, hospitality, or large commercial projects.
  • Experience working in the Washington, DC metropolitan construction market.
  • Familiarity with prevailing-wage or government-funded projects.
  • Existing relationships with regional general contractors, customers, or industry partners.
  • Interest in developing into broader preconstruction, project-management, or commercial leadership responsibilities.

Prior hands-on painting experience is helpful but not required.

Compensation and Benefits

PaintWorx offers a competitive compensation and benefits package that includes:

  • Annual salary of $70,000–$85,000+, based on experience.
  • Employer-paid medical and dental insurance for individual employee coverage.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Profit-sharing opportunities.
  • Paid holidays, vacation time, and sick leave.
  • Employee referral bonus program.
  • Biweekly pay.
  • Company-provided technology, including a smartphone or tablet as needed.
