Is paid search marketing a good career?

Paid search marketing is a viable career that involves managing online advertising campaigns using platforms like Google Ads and Bing Ads. It requires skills in data analysis, keyword research, and ad optimization, and offers opportunities for growth in digital marketing teams. The field is expected to grow as businesses increase their online advertising efforts.

What is paid search marketing?

Paid search marketing is a form of digital advertising where businesses pay to have their ads displayed prominently on search engine results pages (SERPs) when users enter relevant keywords. This approach, often referred to as pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, allows companies to target specific audiences and drive traffic to their websites. Platforms like Google Ads and Bing Ads are commonly used for paid search marketing, offering tools to manage campaigns, set budgets, and measure performance. The goal is to increase visibility, generate leads, and achieve measurable returns on investment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a paid search marketing specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Paid Search Marketing Specialist, you need expertise in PPC campaign management, data analysis, keyword research, and a solid understanding of digital marketing principles, often supported by a relevant degree or Google Ads certification. Familiarity with tools such as Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising, Google Analytics, and bid management platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you optimize campaigns and collaborate with clients or teams. These competencies are crucial for maximizing ROI, driving targeted traffic, and achieving business goals in a competitive digital landscape.

What are some common challenges faced by paid search marketing professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Paid Search Marketing professionals often encounter challenges such as managing multiple campaigns across different platforms, keeping up with frequent algorithm changes, and balancing budget constraints with performance goals. To address these, it's important to stay updated with industry trends, use automation tools for efficiency, and regularly analyze campaign data to make informed optimizations. Collaborating closely with analytics and creative teams can also help ensure campaigns remain effective and aligned with broader marketing objectives.

We're looking for a Paid Search Marketing Manager to join a leading technology company on a 12-month contract. In this role, you'll partner with cross-functional teams and agency partners to drive paid search strategy, optimize PPC performance, and contribute to high-impact digital marketing initiatives. If you're passionate about search marketing, data-driven decision-making, and leveraging AI-powered advertising tools, we'd love to hear from you.
Job Title: Paid Search Marketing Manager
Job Location: 7535 Torrey Santa Fe Rd, San Diego, CA 92129 (Hybrid โ€“ 3 days onsite, rest remote)
Job Duration: 12 Months Contract
Description:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact between internal TurboTax stakeholders and our agency partner, ensuring the PPC program is always aligned to business goals and priorities.
  • Interpret business objectives, growth targets, and marketing strategies from internal stakeholders and translate them into clear, actionable direction for the agency.
  • Contribute to the paid search roadmap โ€” setting priorities, defining testing agendas, and ensuring the agency is executing against the right strategies at the right time.
  • Partner with our agency to achieve performance targets, timelines, and quality standards; review and provide informed feedback on campaign strategy, structure, ad copy, and landing page recommendations.
  • Leverage your hands-on PPC knowledge to ask the right questions, identify gaps, and push for continuous improvement across bid management, keyword strategy, and campaign optimization.
  • Evaluate AI-powered tools and platform-native features (such as Smart Bidding and Performance Max) and collaborate with external and internal partners on when and how to adopt them in support of our goals.
  • Analyze campaign performance data and synthesize insights for internal stakeholders โ€” translating complex PPC metrics into clear business implications and recommendations.
  • Work with the SEO team to ensure paid and organic search strategies are complementary and coordinated.
  • Collaborate with analytics, creative, and web teams on landing page testing, conversion tracking, and audience segmentation to support campaign performance.
  • Lead project management for key PPC initiatives โ€” defining timelines, aligning stakeholders, tracking milestones, and ensuring on-time delivery across teams and the agency.
  • Oversee QA processes to ensure campaigns, ad copy, keywords, and tracking are accurate and on-brand.
  • Conduct competitive research and bring forward-looking insights and recommendations to internal stakeholders and leadership.
  • Stay current on search marketing trends and serve as an informed advocate for innovation within the program.

Skills:
  • 3โ€“4 years of hands-on PPC experience, with a focus on Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, and other search platforms
  • Strong analytical skills with experience interpreting campaign data to inform strategy (Google Ads, SA360, Adobe Analytics, or similar)
  • Solid working knowledge of bid management, keyword strategy, ad copy best practices, quality score optimization, and A/B testing โ€” enough to actively contribute to strategy and hold a high bar for the program.
  • Familiarity with AI-powered advertising tools and a willingness to adopt emerging technologies to drive efficiency and performance
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple workstreams, align stakeholders, and keep initiatives on track
  • Excellent communication skills โ€” able to distill complex PPC concepts for non-technical internal stakeholders and provide clear, strategic direction to agency partners
  • Comfortable operating in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment where priorities can shift and strong judgment is required
  • Collaborative and proactive team player who takes ownership and drives results
