Description
The Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department is seeking an energetic, responsible, and safety-minded part-time Water Sports & Safety Recreation Specialist. This position will support waterfront recreation operations at Ivy Creek Park, including canoe and kayak rentals, leading paddle programs for neighborhood centers, and assisting with Riverside Spray Ground water safety and chemical monitoring.
Program areas may include but are not limited to: spray ground maintenance and monitoring, flatwater paddling instruction, water safety education, and equipment management. The desired candidate possesses strong interpersonal skills, excellent customer service, sound judgment in safety situations, and the ability to work independently outdoors in varying weather conditions.
This position is supervised by the Athletics and Aquatics Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor. Hours vary and include daytime, evening, and weekend hours depending on seasonal and program needs. This position does not offer benefits.
Salary may be negotiable based on qualifications and experience.

Essential Duties
Essential Duties - (Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.)
General
  • Performs basic environmental stewardship (clean up litter/dock)
  • Conduct facility checks to ensure they are ready for public use
  • Basic knowledge of water safety principles, outdoor recreation practices, and risk management.
  • Must be an effective communicator with both the public and fellow employees
  • Must be able to reliably complete assigned tasks
  • Guide volunteers or contractual instructors through tasks assigned by the supervisor

Riverside Spray Ground
  • Test splash pad water regularly (chlorine, pH, alkalinity, etc.)
  • Add and adjust chemicals to maintain proper water balance
  • Monitor and maintain chemical feed systems and pumps
  • Keep accurate records of water tests and chemical usage
  • Inspect pad, play features, and surrounding areas for safety hazards
  • Assist with draining, cleaning, and seasonal opening/closing of facilities
  • Follow all local, state, and health department regulations
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Report equipment issues or safety concerns to supervisors

Ivy Creek Park
Boat Rental Operations
  • Follow proper equipment check in/check out procedures
  • Inspect and inventory equipment (paddles, PFDs, boats, etc.)
  • Conduct monetary transactions using registration software
  • Supervises participant safety and discipline
  • Respond to participant emergencies and conflicts appropriately

Programming and Community Engagement
  • Implement pre-designed paddle programs to neighborhood center participants

Minimum Education and Experience Required
High school diploma or GED
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Ability to prepare basic written reports (ex. Cashiers report);
  • Skilled in public relations and public service experience;
  • Must be available to work a flexible work schedule, including days, evenings and weekends;
  • Trustworthiness and integrity; keyholding and financial responsibilities
  • Initiating and responding to phone calls and emails in a timely manner
  • Must obtain First Aid and CPR certifications within six months of employment;
  • Prior to employment satisfactory checks on the following must be obtained: criminal record, Child Protective Services, driving record and employment reference checks;
  • Solid computer skills with the ability to learn and use data base software for management of recreation programs;
  • Must enjoy working with all age groups; Must enjoy working outdoors.
  • Employees in this position do not generally drive a City vehicle; however, employees who drive a City vehicle must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record according to
  • Must be over the age of 18 if working with chemicals (not required).
