Job Type: Full-Time 30 Hours/Week
Pay Range: $35.00 - $50.00 per hour

Position Summary:
The Pre-Op/PACU Registered Nurse is responsible for providing safe, compassionate, and efficient nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures in an ambulatory surgery center. This role includes preparing patients for surgery in the preoperative phase, and monitoring, stabilizing, and supporting patients through the post-anesthesia recovery phase. The nurse collaborates with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and interdisciplinary staff to ensure optimal patient outcomes and a positive surgical experience.
The nurse will use the nursing process as a framework to guide the delivery of high quality, individualized care to patients and their families. This process involves a series of steps that will help nurses assess patient needs, create appropriate nursing diagnosis, plan appropriate interventions, implement care, and evaluate the outcomes. The nursing process is essential for ensuring that patient care is effective and tailored to the individual needs of each patient.
Essential Responsibilities:
Pre-Operative Duties:
· Perform patient assessments, including health history, vital signs, allergies, and medication reconciliation.
· Confirm informed consent, surgical site verification, and preoperative orders.
· Start IVs, administer prescribed medications, and initiate pre-op protocols.
· Provide education and reassurance to patients and families regarding procedures and post-op care.
· Ensure compliance with infection prevention, patient safety, and regulatory standards.
· Perform pre-operative phone calls to patients as needed.
Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Duties:
· Receive handoff from anesthesia provider and monitor patients recovering from anesthesia.
· Assess airway, breathing, circulation, consciousness level, and pain.
· Administer medications for pain management, nausea, and other post-op needs per provider orders.
· Monitor for adverse reactions or complications, intervening promptly when necessary.
· Provide clear and thorough discharge instructions to patients and caregivers.
· Document all assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately.
General Duties:
· Maintain accurate, timely, and complete medical records.
· Collaborate with the surgical and anesthesia teams to coordinate patient care.
· Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and infection control initiatives.
· Uphold ASC policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements (CMS, AAAHC, The Joint Commission, etc.).
Qualifications:
Education:
· Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
Licensure:
· Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice required.
Experience:
· Minimum of one (1) year of critical care, emergency room, PACU, or pre-op nursing experience required.
· Ambulatory surgery experience preferred.
· Strong assessment skills, clinical judgment, and ability to respond effectively in
emergencies.
Certifications:
· Current BLS certification required.
· Current ACLS certifications required. If not held at hire, must be obtained within three (3) months of start date.
· PALS may be required based on the patient population.
· CPAN, and or CAPA Certification preferred.
Physical Requirements:
· Ability to stand and move for extended periods.
· Ability to assist in patient positioning, transfers, and lifting as needed.
· Visual and auditory acuity for patient monitoring and equipment operation.
· Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and anesthetic agents with appropriate protective equipment.
