What is a packing house?

A packing house is a facility where agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, or meat, are sorted, cleaned, packaged, and prepared for distribution to retailers or customers. Workers in packing houses are responsible for inspecting the quality of the products, operating machinery, and ensuring that all packaging meets safety and quality standards. Packing houses play a crucial role in the supply chain by making sure that food products are properly handled and ready for sale or shipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a packing house worker?

To excel as a Packing House Worker, you need physical stamina, attention to detail, and basic literacy, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with conveyor belts, pallet jacks, and packaging machinery is typically required, along with adherence to safety and hygiene protocols. Teamwork, reliability, and the ability to work efficiently under time constraints are valuable soft skills in this role. These qualifications ensure that products are packed accurately, safely, and efficiently, maintaining quality standards and meeting production targets.

What are some common challenges faced when working in a packing house, and how can they be managed effectively?

Employees in a packing house often encounter challenges such as maintaining a fast pace while ensuring accuracy, handling repetitive tasks, and adhering to strict safety and hygiene standards. Managing these challenges involves staying organized, taking regular breaks to prevent fatigue, and consistently following safety protocols. Teamwork is also crucial, as effective communication with supervisors and coworkers helps address issues quickly and maintain a smooth workflow. Many companies offer on-the-job training and opportunities for advancement to help employees grow in their roles.

Job description

Job Title: House Manager and Family Assistant (with Meal Prep Support)Location: Solon, OH 44139Employment Type: Part-time (25-30 hours/week; 25 hours guaranteed)Start Date: ASAPCompensation: $35-40/hourRequirements
  • Maintain a smoke-free environment
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver's license
  • Comfortable working with dogs
  • CPR certification (preferred, or willing to obtain upon employment)
  • Willing to sign NDA
Proposed Schedule:
  • Monday-Thursday: 1:00 PM - 6:30 PM
  • Friday: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
  • Possibility for occasional overnight support needed
  • Some flexibility in schedule is needed
About Our Family:

We are a single-parent household tucked into a quiet neighborhood on Cleveland's east side. We have a bright 13-year-old who loves music, reading and tennis, and two friendly Labradoodles who believe every visitor is here specifically to love them.

Our preteen is creative and curious, but tends to stick to what feels comfortable and familiar. With eighth grade on the horizon (and high school not far behind), we're looking for someone who can be a steady, upbeat presence-gently nudging her to try new things, stay connected to the bigger world, and build confidence during this pivotal in-between stage.

We moved into our (still relatively new-to-us) home almost two years ago, but between the chaos of the move, a demanding work schedule, and the daily logistics of life with a preteen, our "systems" never really had a chance to take root. What we need now is structured, practical support: help getting the house organized, setting up simple routines that actually stick, and lending a hand with everyday tasks like laundry and dinner prep-so that at the end of a long day, we can exhale, reset, and enjoy real quality time together.

Who You Are / What We're Looking For:

You are naturally organized, proactive, and systems-driven. You see inefficiencies and solve them without needing constant direction. You're collaborative but comfortable taking initiative and making decisions independently. You genuinely enjoy working with pre-teens and dogs, and you bring an engaging, warm energy that helps draw out quieter personalities. You're the kind of person who thrives on creating order out of chaos and takes pride in setting up systems that actually work. You're reliable, flexible, and looking for a role where you can make a meaningful impact on a family's day-to-day life.

Key Responsibilities:

Family Support

  • Pick up daughter from school in afternoons and transport to music lessons, tennis lessons, orthodontist, and other appointments (summer will include trips to the pool and other activities until school restarts in mid-August)
  • Provide light supervision and homework support until end of workday (typically 6:30 PM)
  • Support high school entrance exam prep and keep daughter on track with online practice tests
  • Encourage outdoor activities and social engagement during summer months (zoo, parks, pool)
  • Assist with packing daughter's items for travel
  • Occasional overnight support when parent travels for work

Household Organization & Maintenance

  • Create and maintain household organizational systems
  • Daily resets and light tidying (dishes, surfaces, high-traffic areas)
  • Prep home for biweekly cleaning service
  • Seasonal swaps for clothing, decor, and bedding
  • Coordinate donation drop-offs
  • Indoor plant care and watering
  • Change light bulbs, smoke detector batteries, and other small household tasks
  • Event and holiday prep (1-2 annual gatherings)

Inventory & Errands

  • Maintain pantry, fridge, and household supply inventory
  • Grocery shopping (preference for in-person vs. online delivery)
  • Manage household orders and subscriptions (Amazon, Costco, Target)
  • Dry cleaning pickup and drop-off
  • Returns and occasional gift shopping
  • Sort and manage incoming mail and packages
  • Break down boxes for recycling

Meal Support

  • Plan, shop for, and prepare 3 or 4 hot dinners per week
  • Accommodate low-sodium diet (temporary)
  • Prepare or support daughter in packing school lunches 3-4 days per week
  • Kitchen cleanup and maintenance

Laundry & Linens

  • Wash, fold, and organize all household laundry
  • Weekly bedding and towel rotation
  • Maintain tidy and well-stocked linen areas

Pet Care

  • Walk both dogs each day
  • Feed dogs each evening
  • Schedule and transport dogs to grooming appointments
  • Administer medications, as needed, to both dogs (mostly pills but occasional ear drops)

Deep Cleaning & Special Projects

  • Deep clean fridge and organize pantry with expiration date checks on a regular basis
  • Office organization project- categorizing and filing documents
  • Basement organization project- seasonal/decorative items
  • Coordinate blind installation appointments and vendor recommendations
  • Set up outdoor seasonal planters and wreaths

Vendor Management

  • Coordinate with vendors and contractors- be present for appointments and communicate progress/updates with family
  • Research and obtain quotes for home projects (such as window coverings)

Administrative & Personal Assistant Support

  • Personal travel planning and logistics
  • Calendar management using Hearth or similar system
  • Schedule dentist, orthodontist, doctor, hair and other personal appointments
  • Office organization and filing
  • Enter expenses and organize receipts for quarterly tax preparation
  • Set up and maintain bill tracking system with monthly payment due dates
