ABOUT US:
Startec Refrigeration Service is focused on solving your field refrigeration and HVAC challenges and is one of the most trusted and respected names in commercial and industrial refrigeration, and HVAC system installation and maintenance.  We service cold storage, meat packing, food processing, and recreational ice facilities throughout Western Canada.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Startec Refrigeration Service is one of Western Canada’s most trusted names in commercial, industrial, and recreational refrigeration and HVAC services. We are currently seeking a Materials Controller to join our Edmonton location (4403 – 68th Avenue NW, Edmonton, AB).
The Materials Controller is a key member of our Parts Department, responsible for keeping materials, tools, and inventory moving efficiently through our operations. This role ensures that service teams always have the right parts, on time, and in the right condition to complete their work. You will manage shipping and receiving, stage and organize orders, track inventory, and oversee consumables and tools.
This is a hands-on position that requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate demonstrates Startec’s ‘Own It’ mindset by taking ownership of the shop environment by keeping workspaces organized, materials accessible, and operations running efficiently and safely.
KEY RESULTS AREAS (KRAs):
SHIPPING & RECEIVING (Weighting 30%)
  • Prepare Shipments, ensuring sufficient packaging to avoid damage during transit.
  • Contact required freight company(s) and arrange shipment collection.
  • Load Freight into vehicles using appropriate material handling equipment.
  • Record all outgoing shipments to the Startec Shipping Log.
  • Receive all incoming shipments, checking for package accuracy and any damages, using appropriate material handling equipment.
  • Record the Shipment in the Startec Receiving Log
  • Confirm parts against the packing slip, following all required QC Requirements.
  • Place received parts in either the staging area or into inventory. Ensuring parts are tagged as accurately.
  • Scan paperwork and add to the PO and receive the order in D365
  • Notify all required staff that order has arrived.
EXPEDITING (Weighting 25%)
  • Follow up on all open outstanding purchase orders by contacting suppliers, via email and phone. Using Arrival Overview process.
  • Adjust delivery and ship dates as required on purchase orders.
  • Update all other staff of unexpected delays and changes.
ORDER PICKING AND STAGING (Weighting 20%)
  • Pick and stage parts for work orders, projects, and parts sales with accuracy. Ensuring correct and detailed labeling is attached.
  • Communicate completeness of staged orders to align with work schedules and required delivery dates
  • Maintain clear records and communicate discrepancies.
  • Support technicians by preparing materials in advance to avoid delays.
  • Process returned or unused parts, sending back to the suppliers or returning to inventory in a timely manner to avoid invoicing delays.
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT (Weighting 15%)
  • Conduct weekly cycle counts and year-end inventory counts to ensure inventory accuracy
  • Process adjustments, maintain bin locations, and maintain inventory shelving and organize to maintain order picking efficiency.
  • Help identify shortages or excess inventory to improve efficiency.
ASSET AND CONSUMABLES MANAGEMENT (Weighting 10%)
  • Manage tool sign-in/out. Changing who is responsible for each with in D365 
  • Inspect tools upon return for damage and quarantine as needed
  • Send tools for repair and calibration when due
  • Monitor and replenish consumables to support daily operations.
  • Ensure tools and consumables are well-maintained, safe, and ready for use.
QUALIFICIATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2-4 years of experience in warehousing, ideally in construction, oil & gas or manufacturing
  • Proficiency in shipping receiving processes, software, and tools
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational abilities.
  • Knowledge of industry regulations and best practices; familiarity with construction materials and equipment preferred.
