Packaging Manager information

What are some typical challenges faced by packaging managers, and how can they be addressed?

Packaging Managers often encounter challenges such as maintaining quality standards while optimizing costs, managing supply chain disruptions, and meeting sustainability goals. To address these, they collaborate closely with procurement, production, and design teams to ensure materials meet both budget and quality requirements. Staying updated on industry trends and adopting new packaging technologies can also help mitigate these challenges. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential for balancing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

What skills do you need for packaging manager?

A packaging manager needs strong organizational and leadership skills to oversee packaging operations effectively. They should have knowledge of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, and quality control, along with proficiency in using industry software and tools. Good communication and problem-solving abilities are also essential for coordinating teams and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Is packaging a stable career?

Packaging managers oversee the design, production, and quality control of packaging processes, which are essential in many industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods. The demand for packaging professionals tends to be stable due to ongoing industry needs and the importance of packaging in product safety and branding. Job stability can also depend on industry trends, technological advancements, and the ability to adapt to new packaging materials and regulations.

What is a packaging manager?

As a packaging manager, your job is to supervise packaging operations during your shift. You typically work in a manufacturing facility or warehouse. Your duties include ensuring that the proper packaging materials and products are available, that the equipment gets regular maintenance, and that you maintain an efficient schedule established by your supervisors. Your responsibilities are also to help hire and train new workers on your shift, contribute to budgets and performance reports, and maintain a proper supply of inventory at the facility. Job description

We are seeking an experienced and strategic leader to join our Procurement Leadership team as Director, Strategic Sourcing, Packaging for North America. This is a high-impact role at a pivotal moment for our business - we are integrating two distinct packaging organizations (CA and US) into a unified NA function, expanding our product portfolio significantly, and building the supply chain infrastructure to support the next phase of HelloFresh's growth.

Reporting to the VP Strategic Sourcing, you will own the end-to-end packaging sourcing strategy across North America, leading a team of Strategy Managers accountable for key categories including Corrugated, Liners, Media, Ice, and Ready-to-Eat packaging (trays, lidding film, and other formats). You will partner closely with other Sourcing leaders to build a high-performing, strategically aligned organization and serve as a key member of the Procurement Leadership team.

You will...

Lead & Build the NA Packaging Sourcing Organization

  • Serve as a key member of the Procurement Leadership team, partnering with the VP of Procurement to shape the strategic direction of packaging sourcing across North America
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of Strategy Managers across core packaging categories (Corrugated, Liners, Media, Ice, RTE packaging), fostering a high-performance culture grounded in HelloFresh's DNA
  • Drive the integration of the CA and US packaging sourcing teams - aligning ways of working, processes, and tools while respecting the distinct needs of each market
  • Build a team culture of urgency, ownership, and continuous improvement; challenge the organization to deliver outsized results

Own the Packaging Sourcing Strategy

  • Develop and execute short and long-term NA packaging sourcing roadmap that supports HelloFresh's growth strategy across brands and product formats - from traditional meal kits to RTE meals, smoothies, and beyond
  • Set and oversee the achievement of OKRs on cost, supply chain resilience, innovation, supplier performance, and team development
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to platform sourcing globally, leveraging HelloFresh's international scale where beneficial
  • Explore and develop innovative supply chain models including insourcing of packaging inputs (e.g. recipe card printing, liner production) where commercially justified

Drive Cost, Quality & Supply Chain Performance

  • Support annual budgeting and drive savings initiatives across NA packaging spend; communicate monthly category performance to Senior Leadership
  • Lead multi-million dollar contract negotiations and RFP processes across key packaging categories, applying a total cost of ownership (TCO) lens to all commercial decisions
  • Scale and strengthen our supplier network to support menu expansion and customization; manage supply chain risk through dual-sourcing strategies, supplier performance management, and proactive contingency planning
  • Partner with Packaging Engineering to ensure suppliers meet quality and specification requirements, and identify opportunities to improve packaging performance, sustainability, and margin
  • Improve inventory management and supply planning approaches across the NA network, reducing exposure and increasing agility

Cross-functional Partnership & Stakeholder Management

  • Partner with Product, Operations, Finance, and Engineering to ensure packaging sourcing strategies support business needs across a growing and diversifying product range
  • Navigate competing priorities across NA business units and brands, providing clear recommendations and influencing stakeholders at the most senior levels
  • Represent NA Packaging Sourcing in global forums, identifying and pursuing cross-border sourcing opportunities where scale and economics support it

You are...

  • A strategic packaging sourcing leader with a track record of building high-performing teams and delivering measurable commercial results
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and change - you challenge the status quo, ask hard questions, and drive clarity in complex, evolving environments
  • An expert negotiator with hands-on experience managing multi-million dollar contracts and complex supplier relationships
  • A data-driven decision maker who builds the analytical rigor and commercial discipline of the teams you lead
  • A strong people leader with proven experience developing diverse, geographically distributed teams
  • A skilled communicator who can translate complex supply chain trade-offs into clear recommendations for senior leadership
  • Agile and self-directed - you thrive in fast-paced environments, move quickly, and bring others along with you
  • Curious and externally connected - you stay close to market trends, supplier innovation, and global sourcing opportunities

You have...

  • 12+ years of progressive experience in procurement or strategic sourcing, with significant packaging category experience
  • Demonstrated experience building and leading high-performing sourcing teams, ideally across multiple geographies or business units
  • Hands-on experience in RFPs, contract negotiations, category strategy development, and supplier performance management
  • Strong financial acumen including budget management, TCO modeling, and cost driver analysis
  • Experience navigating organizational change, integration, or transformation - ideally in a fast-growing, multi-brand environment
  • A degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred
  • Flexibility to travel (up to 25%)
  • Fluency in Google Suite; comfort with data tools and supply chain systems

You'll get...

  • Box Discount - Amazing discounts on 1 box per week! 75% discount on weekly HelloFresh and Chefs Plate meal kits AND 50% off weekly Factor meal box.
  • Health & Wellness - Health & Dental benefits from day 1, a Health Spending Account, unlimited access to the Headspace app to meet your self-care needs, and 25% discount on GoodLife fitness memberships!
  • Vacation & PTO - Time off is also an important part of self-care! We offer generous vacation and PTO to help you create a good work-life balance.
  • Family Benefits - A parental leave top-up program for expectant parents.
  • Growth & Development - We support your career progression, provide development opportunities, and invest in your continued learning through our organization wide L&D fund.
  • Work Hard & Have Fun - From team socials to engaging company days, you'll have plenty of opportunity to experience the fun!
  • Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives - With impactful ERG's like FreshPride, Women Empowered and LIMES, we are committed to our diversity, equity & inclusion efforts.
