What is a packaging designer?

Packaging Designers are creative professionals who conceptualize and develop the visual and structural design of product packaging. They work to ensure that packaging not only protects the product but also attracts consumers and communicates brand identity. Their responsibilities often include selecting materials, creating graphics and layouts, and collaborating with marketing and manufacturing teams to ensure functionality and appeal. Packaging Designers must balance aesthetics, cost, sustainability, and practicality in their work.

What does a packaging designer do?

A packaging designer creates physical packaging and graphic designs for various industries such as beauty products, food and beverage items, and toys. Their duties include making renderings in 2D and 3D in collaboration with product development professionals and graphic artists. They often work on the entire project, including the design specs, harmonizing the packaging with brand identity, and final production. Other responsibilities of a packaging designer are to choose the type of materials for the packaging and make modifications to samples before large-scale production. Qualifications for this position vary but typically include a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a relevant field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a packaging designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Packaging Designer, you need a strong background in graphic design, an understanding of materials and manufacturing processes, and typically a degree in design or a related field. Proficiency with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and familiarity with 3D modeling tools are essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you develop innovative solutions that meet client needs and brand guidelines. These skills ensure that packaging is both visually appealing and functional, supporting brand identity and product protection.

What are some common challenges packaging designers face when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Packaging Designers often work closely with marketing, product development, and manufacturing teams, and one common challenge is balancing creative vision with practical constraints such as budget, material limitations, and production timelines. Clear communication and a collaborative mindset are essential to ensure the design aligns with brand guidelines while remaining feasible for mass production. Building strong relationships with team members and being open to feedback can help Packaging Designers navigate these challenges and deliver effective, innovative solutions.

About 52Launch
52 Launch is a full-service design and technology that takes unique product ideas from concept to market. We partner with entrepreneurs and growing businesses to handle every step: industrial design, sourcing, manufacturing, branding, and marketing; all integrated, all in-house. Our clients come to us because they are ready to execute, and they stay because we deliver. If you're looking for a place where the work is tangible, the team is sharp, and no two projects look the same, you'll find it here.
Position Description
We are a team of builders, strategists, and creatives who hold ourselves to an exceptionally high standard because our clients depend on us to get it right. We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Graphic Designer with proven experience designing packaging for consumer products to lead the development and execution of our product visual identities. This role is ideal for a designer who can independently produce polished, production-ready work, while also supporting a wide range of creative needs across the company from branding to internal presentations and marketing collateral.
Packaging design will be a core responsibility, but you'll also play a critical role in supporting how our clients' products are presented across every touchpoint-digital, physical, and in retail. You'll work closely with our design, product development, and marketing teams to bring new products to life with clean, consumer-ready visuals that reflect each brand's identity.
The ideal candidate approaches design from a systems perspective, ensuring that all visual elements work together cohesively. You are thoughtful in your decision-making and committed to delivering work that maintains consistency and integrity across all formats, from packaging to digital experiences.
Responsibilities
  • Design packaging from concept to production-including artwork, dielines, inserts, and labels, optimized for retail.
  • Develop brand-aligned packaging solutions that balance aesthetics, functionality, and market appeal.
  • Research and select materials that meet performance, cost, and sustainability goals.
  • Collaborate with design, marketing, and production teams to align packaging with product form, unboxing experience, and marketing objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, labeling, and environmental regulations.
  • Prepare print-ready files, review proofs, and support production through final delivery.
  • Produce prototypes and mock-ups to visualize, test, and refine design concepts.
  • Create supporting assets, such as instruction manuals and hang tags as needed.
  • Occasionally support broader graphic design needs (e.g. logo design, branding, pitch decks, one-pagers, and other marketing graphics) across various client brands.
  • Develop structured color palettes, typography systems, and formalized brand guidelines
  • Create high-quality, on-brand assets for packaging, marketing collateral, and digital platforms
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure consistent and accurate brand application
  • Additional responsibilities
    • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams (sales, creative, and product)
    • This job description is not intended to cover every single requirement of the job
    • The company reserves the right to change job duties at any time.

What success looks like in the first 3-6 months
  • AI-forward approach to daily work and responsibilities
  • Successful setup and management of projects
  • Well-organized day-to-day and the ability to pivot quickly, moving from project to project while meeting tight deadlines
  • Consistent quality of work and on-time deliverables
  • Efficient and clear communication with clients

Qualifications & Experience (required)
  • 5+ years of graphic design experience with a strong portfolio of packaging and design work to be shared during the interview process.
  • Expert in Adobe Creative Suite (especially Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
  • Understanding of packaging production, dielines, print specs, and file prep
  • Deep understanding of core design principles, including color theory, typography, and layout
  • Proven ability to translate brand strategy into cohesive and scalable visual systems
  • Ability to take creative direction but also work independently and drive timelines in a fast paced environment with numerous projects underway simultaneously
  • Comfortable working across multiple brands and design styles
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills; comfortable interfacing directly with founders and marketing leaders.

Qualifications & Experience (preferred)
  • Degree or certification in Graphic Design
  • Experience with motion graphics or social media asset creation
