This design engineer position, based out of our Madison Heights, Michigan office, requires a candidate with good problem solving, critical thinking skills, and a 3-Dimensional mindset with good spatial awareness. Any automotive packaging experience is a plus. The engineer would allow you to be a key part of the auto industry's supply chain and get a first look at interesting new components used on upcoming vehicle launches, including autonomous and electric vehicles! You will have a hand in multiple functions in this role including design, project management, and customer relations to really expand your abilities to make a mark in the packaging industry. PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Engineer will design, test and implement packaging designs to jointly develop and design derivative and new product concepts for JSP and its customers and to meet the needs of all key stakeholders, including engineering, manufacturing, quality, JSP Mold, customers, and suppliers. The Engineer will also:
  • Provide solutions that optimize cost, material handling, safety, storage space, weight, product cleanliness & protection and standardization.
  • Interact with key stakeholders to facilitate the development of new production capable part/system designs, gathering information from a variety of sources.
  • Participate in the packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, performance testing, and flawless launch execution with both internal operations and external suppliers.
  • Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely and cost effective solutions. Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging.
  • Review data and prints with key stakeholders for omissions, errors, content and accuracy to ensure controlled and managed CAD data, prints and GD&T sheets.
  • Interface with customers and suppliers in a positive manner that enforces the image of JSP as an expert in the field of product design and development.
  • Resolve conflicts between customer design requirements and our process capability through negotiation. Conduct economic studies of various design options that meet the customer's performance requirements. Conduct case studies to determine approximate internal costs.
  • Interface with key stakeholders and provide engineering estimate support as necessary. Communicate as necessary to obtain/share information.

Requirements
The Design Engineer must have a BS degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline and at least one year experience with, or advanced knowledge of, expanded polypropylene. Successful candidates must also possess:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Design, related discipline or equivalent experience
  • The ability to read and interpret drawings and blueprints and have the ability to perform basic 2D and 3D CAD layouts.
  • Knowledge of drafting and specification standards to create production-ready documentation.
  • Ability to be autonomous, responsible, reliable, and self-motivated.
  • Drive to learn new processes and perform at a high level is essential.
  • Demonstrated ability in process improvement, metric development, and problem solving.
  • Good oral and written communication skills required with attention to details.
  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of management required.
