How much do paramedics jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average hourly pay for paramedics in the United States is $26.36, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $21.15 and $29.33 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Paramedics vs Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs)?

AspectParamedicsEmergency Medical Technicians (EMTs)
Required CertificationsAdvanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) or Paramedic licenseBasic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification
Work EnvironmentAmbulances, hospitals, emergency scenesAmbulances, emergency scenes, public events
Scope of PracticeAdvanced procedures like IVs, medication administrationBasic life support, CPR, oxygen therapy
Employer & Industry UsageHospitals, EMS agencies, fire departmentsEMS agencies, fire departments, ambulance services

Paramedics perform advanced medical procedures and have higher certification levels compared to EMTs. They are trained to handle complex emergencies, administer medications, and provide advanced life support. EMTs provide essential basic life support and are often the first responders. Both roles are vital in emergency medical services but differ significantly in training, scope, and responsibilities.

Is 27 too old to become a paramedic?

Paramedics can typically start training at any age as long as they meet the educational and certification requirements, which often include a high school diploma or equivalent and EMT certification. Many paramedics begin their careers in their late 20s or later, and age is generally not a barrier as long as physical fitness and commitment are maintained. Experience and maturity can be valuable assets in emergency medical services roles.

What exactly do paramedics do?

Paramedics are healthcare professionals who provide emergency medical care and transportation to patients in urgent situations. They assess patients, perform life-saving procedures, administer medications, and operate emergency equipment, often working in ambulances or emergency scenes. Certification and training in advanced life support are essential for this role.

Carolina First EMS

Elgin, SC

$40/hr

Part-time, Per diem

Posted 18 days ago

Job description

At Carolina First EMS, we put high-quality health-care within your reach.  Whether you use a  wheelchair or require stretcher transport, we have the equipment and expertise you need to get to your appointments on-time and hassle-free.
Whether you live in an extended care facility or the same house you moved into 50 years ago, we specialize in helping you make full use of our community’s healthcare options.

EMTs and Paramedics, Special Events Division Carolina First EMS, Columbia and Elgin, South Carolina Part-time PRN, W2. Multiple openings, immediate start.

Carolina First EMS is standing up a Special Events Division and hiring South Carolina certified EMTs and paramedics for event medical work across the Midlands, beginning with a major multi day event this October.

Pay

  • Paramedic: $30.00 per hour base, plus a $10.00 per hour event differential, so $40.00 per hour on event shifts
  • EMT: $22.00 per hour base, plus a $10.00 per hour event differential, so $32.00 per hour on event shifts
  • Overtime at time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek
  • Paid as a W2 employee, not 1099

October event, Columbia

  • Eleven consecutive days
  • Full day shifts, roughly 12 to 15 hours
  • Most crew members work 3 to 4 shifts across the run, not all 11 days

Beyond October

This is a standing division, not a one-time detail. Members get first call on our year-round event work: festivals, concerts, and other standby coverage across the Midlands.

What you will do

  • Provide patient care and standby coverage at events, in a First Aid station and roaming on foot
  • Work as part of a crew under an on-site Event Medical Supervisor
  • Move patients to First Aid, including by wheelchair
  • Staff a dedicated ALS transport ambulance as assigned
  • Document every patient encounter in our electronic patient care record

What you need

  • Current South Carolina EMT or Paramedic certification in good standing
  • Current CPR certification; paramedics also need ACLS
  • Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screen
  • Able to stand and walk for extended periods, work outdoors in variable weather, and lift and move patients with assistance

We especially want to hear from you if

  • You have worked large fairground or festival first aid in past years
  • You currently work for a county EMS agency or another service and want event shifts on your days off
  • You have event medicine, festival, race, or stadium experience
