What is an overnight weekend nanny?

Overnight Weekend Nannies are childcare professionals who provide care for children during nighttime hours over the weekends, typically from Friday evening through Sunday morning. Their responsibilities include supervising children while they sleep, assisting with bedtime routines, responding to any nighttime needs, and sometimes preparing meals or helping with light household tasks. These nannies allow parents to rest, work, or attend events knowing their children are safe and cared for overnight. Overnight Weekend Nannies often have experience in childcare, first aid training, and may be required to stay awake or sleep lightly to ensure the safety and comfort of the children.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight weekend nanny?

To thrive as an Overnight Weekend Nanny, you need experience in childcare, basic first aid/CPR certification, and a strong understanding of child development and safety practices. Familiarity with baby monitors, feeding equipment, and scheduling or communication apps is often required. Patience, reliability, and excellent communication skills help build trust with both children and parents. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring the well-being of children overnight and providing peace of mind to families.

What are some common challenges an overnight weekend nanny may face, and how can they be managed?

Overnight Weekend Nannies often encounter challenges such as adjusting to irregular sleep schedules, managing children's nighttime routines, and responding to unexpected situations like illness or sleep disturbances. To manage these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication with parents about expectations, routines, and emergency procedures. Being proactive, maintaining consistency in caregiving, and having strategies for self-care (like napping during the day) can help nannies stay alert and provide reliable care throughout their shifts.

Job description

A private Manhattan family is seeking an experienced live-in weekend nanny for their two young children, ages six months and three years. The parents enjoy spending plenty of time with their children on weekends and are looking for a nanny who will become a trusted and valued part of their household.

The schedule is Friday at 8:00 a.m. through Monday at 8:00 a.m., with an immediate start preferred. Both parents have busy schedules, so the nanny will have periods of sole responsibility for both children, as well as shared care.

The nanny will have a private bedroom and bathroom in the family’s main residence. The children follow consistent routines and generally sleep through the night, although the nanny will remain on call and handle any wakings. The family values unstructured play and does not expect the nanny to plan constant activities.

The family may travel for occasional weekends away, primarily on short domestic trips, and the nanny will be expected to accompany them. On occasion, the parents may travel without the children, in which case the nanny will assume full proxy-parenting responsibility for the weekend.

There are other staff members in the household, including a weekday nanny.

  • Provide attentive and developmentally appropriate care for both children
  • Manage morning, nap, evening and bedtime routines
  • Handle overnight wakings, including when a child is unwell
  • Prepare meals and snacks for the children
  • Complete child-related tidying and organization
  • Manage Friday preschool drop-off and pickup
  • Work comfortably in both sole-charge and shared-care settings
  • Accompany the family on occasional weekend trips
  • Assume full proxy-parenting responsibility when the parents travel without the children

  • Strong infant, preschool and sibling experience
  • Previous live-in and overnight childcare experience
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to remain composed under pressure
  • Proactive and confident working independently
  • Intuitive awareness of family dynamics and appropriate professional boundaries
  • Driving and swimming abilities preferred

  • Minimum of ten years of professional nanny experience
  • Fluent English
  • Current infant and child CPR and first-aid certification
  • Excellent, verifiable professional references
  • Willingness to work the full live-in weekend schedule and remain on call overnight
  • Willingness to travel occasionally
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States

  • $700+ per day, depending on experience
  • Benefits including a generous health insurance stipend
