The Agency

The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a community-based charitable organization dedicated to reducing the incidence of crime and increasing community safety through preventative and restorative justice practices. To accomplish these ends, we provide direct services to individuals at risk, advocacy for effective responses to crime with the individuals involved and education for youth and adults in the community. The Program

Berkana House is a Community Residential Facility (CRF) for women on conditional release. Berkana House fosters a holistic environment of healing, empowerment, and respect. We are dedicated to supporting women positively transition from the institution back to the community. Berkana House offers a mother-child program, and children may reside at Berkana House. An independent living model allows residents to develop essential life skills. Staff are on-site and available 24 hours a day.

The Position

Reporting to the Team Lead, the Overnight Support Worker is responsible for ensuring the well-being, safety and security of residents and the facility at night. This will consist of offering ongoing support to residents through conversation, role modeling behaviours and engaging in activities to promote positive reintegration. Supervision of resident activities both in the house and the community is also an integral part of the position. Working from a trauma-informed practice is imperative to the role. As this is a residential facility, other duties will be required, including basic household chores.

The Overnight Support Worker will have relevant post-secondary education and/or relevant experience. They will demonstrate an understanding of women-centered practice in the criminal justice system. The successful candidate will have strong boundaries, effective communication skills, as well as crisis prevention and intervention skills and a strong ability to solve problems. Brain Story Certification is considered an asset.

This is a 30-hour per week position consisting of three 10-hour shifts Wednesday-Friday. It is generally a working alone position.

This term-certain position is being offered to the successful candidate for an ideal start date of August 22, 2026 until September 30, 2026.
