What Does an Overnight Summer Camp Counselor Do?

As an overnight summer camp counselor, you plan activities and guide campers through a camp curriculum. Sleepaway camps differ from regular camps in that children and adolescents are typically on-site with little or no parental supervision, so many camps have late-night activities to keep kids occupied. However, some overnight summer camp counselors do not spend the night at the camp—many work in shifts, though someone has to be on-site to handle any problems or emergencies that occur. Overnight summer camp counselors frequently help create activities, modify plans based on scheduling needs, interact with children and parents, and supervise junior counselors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Overnight Summer Camp Counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight Summer Camp Counselor, you need experience working with children, basic first aid and CPR certification, and an understanding of youth development. Familiarity with camp management software, safety protocols, and activity planning tools is also beneficial. Strong communication, leadership, and conflict resolution skills make a counselor stand out in building trust and maintaining a positive camp environment. These skills and qualifications ensure the safety, well-being, and engagement of campers throughout their overnight experience.

What are some common challenges Overnight Summer Camp Counselors face and how can they be addressed?

Overnight Summer Camp Counselors often encounter challenges such as managing homesickness among campers, balancing diverse group dynamics, and maintaining energy during long, active days. Success in this role often depends on strong communication, patience, and teamwork with fellow counselors and camp leadership. Proactive strategies include establishing clear routines, fostering open dialogue, and utilizing support networks within the camp staff. Counselors who are adaptable and empathetic typically find these challenges rewarding and are able to create a positive experience for both campers and themselves.

What are Overnight Summer Camp Counselors?

Overnight Summer Camp Counselors are responsible for supervising and guiding campers throughout the duration of an overnight camp. They ensure the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of campers by organizing activities, facilitating group interactions, and addressing any issues that arise. Counselors also serve as role models, helping campers build confidence, develop social skills, and create lasting memories during their stay. Their role often includes overnight supervision, managing cabin groups, and fostering a positive camp environment.

Job description

Make a difference. Be a role model. Have fun!

Do you love working with kids and bringing joy to their day? JCC Greater Boston is looking for enthusiastic, caring, and responsible Camp Counselors to join our team this summer.

JCC Greater Boston offers free bus service for staff from Cambridge, Brookline, Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury, Wayland, Framingham, Natick, Needham, Newton and Wellesley during the summer season.

Camp Counselors are the heart of camp life – guiding campers through activities, cheering them on at swim, joining them in arts & crafts, and making sure every camper feels included, safe, and valued. Counselors are role models who work closely with co-counselors and camp leadership to build strong group dynamics and create unforgettable summer experiences.

What you will do each day:

Each morning, you'll welcome your campers with energy and enthusiasm, helping them feel excited for what's ahead. You'll guide your group through a variety of activities — one hour you might be cheering them on in a game of capture the flag, the next you're diving into an arts & crafts project or encouraging hesitant swimmers in the pool. Lunch brings laughter, songs, and silly moments, and you'll be right there helping campers feel included and connected. Throughout the day, you'll be a role model — building relationships, keeping campers safe, and making sure every child feels supported. By the end of the day, you'll leave camp tired but smiling, knowing you've helped kids create joyful memories.

Why work with us?

At our camps, the best part of the day is simple: the campers. Our staff say their favorite moments are playing games, cheering campers on at swim, creating art together, and bonding over shared interests. Staff describe camp as fun, dynamic, and inclusive.
