What is an overnight software developer?

Overnight Software Developers are professionals who work outside of traditional business hours, typically during nighttime shifts. Their primary responsibilities include writing, testing, and maintaining software code, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring the smooth operation of software systems overnight. These roles are common in companies that require 24/7 support, such as those in finance, healthcare, or global tech firms. Overnight developers help ensure that system updates, maintenance, and urgent fixes can be addressed without disrupting daytime operations. This position often requires strong problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently, and flexibility in working hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight software developer?

To thrive as an Overnight Software Developer, you need strong programming expertise, problem-solving skills, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, continuous integration tools, and cloud platforms is typically required, along with knowledge of languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript. Self-motivation, effective communication, and the ability to work independently during off-hours are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills ensure timely software delivery, effective collaboration with remote or distributed teams, and the ability to address urgent issues during non-standard hours.

What are some unique challenges faced by overnight software developers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Overnight Software Developers often encounter challenges such as limited real-time collaboration with day-shift team members and managing personal energy levels during off-peak hours. To overcome these, it’s important to leverage detailed documentation, use asynchronous communication tools, and schedule regular handovers with colleagues on other shifts. Additionally, establishing a consistent sleep schedule and creating a supportive work environment can help maintain productivity and well-being. Many companies also provide overlapping hours or virtual meetings to foster team cohesion despite the unconventional hours.

Job description

About the job Our mission

Boom is on a mission to level the playing field for the 110+ million renters in the US by making housing more flexible, affordable, and rewarding. Boom is building a suite of rental financial services for renters and property managers, including tenant screening, rent payment reporting, rent reporting-as-a-service, and a number of integrations with the largest property management systems (PMS). Boom serves renters through the Boom App and property managers via the Boom Platform. Now serving thousands of renters, Boom is led by second-time founder Rob Whiting (ex-BCG, Rubicon). It's backed by investors such as Starting Line, Clocktower Ventures, Mischief VC (CEO of Plaid Zach Perret's fund), Gilgamesh Ventures (Petal co-founders), and angels such as William Hockey CEO of Column, founder/former CTO of Plaid) and Harry Stebbings. Boom has been profiled by Inman, Business Insider, HousingWire, and more.

 Opportunity

We’re expanding our engineering team to meet the growing demands of our B2B partners and B2C users. With a robust product roadmap and new opportunities on the horizon, we’re looking for a Senior Engineer to help scale our platform and build new products. This role offers the chance to work closely with our Co-founders and senior engineers, contributing directly to the growth of the company as we move from Seed to Series A and beyond. For this role, we are hiring for candidates in Austin, TX, where our leadership and product team is located. Comp range listed is directional and adjustable +/- based on competency.

Our engineering culture is hands-on and pragmatic — we value shipping real product, maintaining high standards, and communicating clearly. If you’re excited about scaling impactful products and building in a collaborative, fast-paced environment, reach out.

 What you'll do

  • Design, build, and maintain critical user-facing products and backend systems that power our platform

  • Contribute to and help evolve our core backend architecture, focusing on scalability and performance

  • Collaborate closely with product, operations, and leadership to align technical solutions with business needs

  • Drive best practices in software engineering, including code reviews, testing, and documentation

  • Play a key role in shaping engineering culture, contributing to hiring efforts, and potentially mentoring or leading other engineers over time

What you'll need

  • 5+ years of experience in web development

  • Strong backend development skills with a preference for full stack engineers

  • Proven ability to create scalable performant solutions within aggressive deadlines

  • Proven experience working in Ruby (or similar backend languages or willingness to learn), with the ability to ramp up quickly in our stack

  • Comfortable working across the stack, with React/Next.js and TypeScript strongly preferred

  • You are already running AI coding agents autonomously, including overnight, to ship. Daily Claude Code use is table stakes

  • experience integrating with third-party APIs: OAuth flows, webhooks, rate limits, indempotency

  • Track record of owning services in production. Comfortable with observability, on-call rotations, and debugging real incidents

  • Experience with AWS, terraform and Infrastructure in general is a plus

  • Strong communication skills — you’re comfortable collaborating across teams and explaining technical concepts clearly

  • A self-starter mentality with the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, early-stage environment

  • Empathy for our end users, including low-to-moderate-income renters, and a desire to build products that make a difference

Benefits of working at Boom

  • Competitive salary with stock options

  • US employees: Full healthcare coverage (health, dental, vision) including 50% coverage for dependents

  • 15 days of Paid Time Off (PTO) per year + 3 sick days + all US federal holidays (11 in total) (note: we think unlimited PTO is BS and causes some employees to feel guilty when they take it)

  • Company-issued laptop/MacBook

  • Company-sponsored training & development

  • Regular off-sites and other company-sponsored travel opportunities
