Job description

Overview

Overnight Residential Aide

Samaritan Daytop Village operates transitional housing programs for single adults and families experiencing homelessness across all five boroughs of New York City. The Residential Aide supports this mission by assisting with client intake, monitoring resident safety and well-being, enforcing facility policies, and maintaining a secure and respectful living environment. The Residential Aide role involves direct interaction with clients navigating complex challenges and requires a consistent presence, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm, level-headed, and professional in emotionally charged or unpredictable situations. 

Responsibilities
  • Welcome new residents and provide orientation to shelter policies, services, and daily routines

  • Assist with client check-ins, discharges, and documentation using DHS CARES system

  • Monitor resident safety and behavior through regular rounds and informal engagement

  • Enforce facility rules while maintaining a respectful and supportive environment

  • Respond to incidents and complete timely, accurate reports

  • Support residents in accessing services by making referrals and coordinating with case managers

  • Maintain cleanliness and security of resident rooms, including tagging and storing personal belongings when needed

  • Communicate facility maintenance needs to supervisors and ensure common areas are orderly

  • Build rapport with residents and offer guidance during daily interactions

  • Uphold confidentiality and follow all agency and DHS protocols

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma (GED) required

  • Minimum of one year experience working with individuals facing homelessness, substance use, mental health challenges, or other complex needs

  • Familiarity with shelter operations or supportive housing environments preferred

  • Basic computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn internal databases (e.g., DHS CARES system)

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work respectfully with individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds

  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure or crisis situations

  • Commitment to trauma-informed care, confidentiality, and ethical standards in client interactions

  • Willingness to obtain CPR certification and/or Food Protection Certificate during employment 

Additional Information 

This is a full-time non-exempt role with an hourly rate of $21.97 (annualized at 35 hours a week to $40,000) with a full benefits package. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, 25 days of paid time off, access to a retirement account with an employer to match, and tuition reimbursement.

This role is located in the Tremont section of the Bronx and has a schedule of Friday-Tuesday 12am-8am.

For payroll and systems purposes, this role is titled "Residence Worker".
