Overnight Pharmacy Software Developer information

What does an overnight pharmacy software developer do?

An Overnight Pharmacy Software Developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining software systems that support pharmacy operations, often working night shifts to ensure critical updates and maintenance cause minimal disruption to daytime operations. They collaborate with pharmacists and IT teams to streamline prescription management, inventory tracking, and regulatory compliance. Their work ensures that pharmacy software functions correctly, securely, and efficiently, especially during off-peak hours when updates and troubleshooting are less likely to impact pharmacy staff and patients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight pharmacy software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight Pharmacy Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (in languages like Java, C#, or Python), a solid understanding of pharmacy workflows, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with pharmacy management systems, HL7/FHIR healthcare data standards, and experience with databases and APIs are common technical requirements. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are valuable soft skills, especially when working independently on overnight shifts. These capabilities ensure reliable, secure software that supports pharmacy operations and patient safety around the clock.

What unique challenges might an overnight pharmacy software developer face, and how can they effectively manage them?

Overnight Pharmacy Software Developers often encounter unique challenges such as working independently during non-traditional hours and resolving urgent technical issues with limited on-site support. Effective communication with daytime teams and thorough documentation are essential to ensure seamless transitions across shifts. Additionally, developers in this role must be proactive in prioritizing critical tasks, such as maintaining system uptime and addressing pharmacy-specific compliance requirements, to support continuous pharmacy operations. Success in this position requires adaptability, strong problem-solving skills, and a commitment to patient safety.

Job description

Forward Deployed AI Engineer
Location: Washington, DC (McLean, VA – on-site 5 days/week)
Compensation: $150,000 – $200,000 + competitive equity
Clearance Required: SECRET

ABOUT THIS ROLE
We are seeking a Forward Deployed AI Engineer with approximately 4–6 years of experience to architect and deploy agentic AI systems supporting U.S. Government partners tackling fraud, waste, and abuse — a trillion-dollar challenge. You will work directly with federal agency stakeholders to understand complex mission requirements and translate them into production-ready technical systems. This role combines hands-on software engineering, applied AI development, data analysis, and partner-facing problem solving.

You will:
• Build and deploy agentic AI systems, including RAG pipelines, multi-agent frameworks, and tool-calling agents
• Embed directly with federal agency partners to understand mission needs and convert them into working technical solutions
• Analyze public, proprietary, and restricted government datasets to identify potentially fraudulent contractors and spending activity
• Build data pipelines and analytical workflows that help prevent future improper or fraudulent spending
• Own projects from initial requirements gathering through architecture, development, deployment, and iteration
• Integrate large language models with databases, APIs, analytical tools, and government systems
• Present technical concepts and system capabilities to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders
• Travel locally to government facilities throughout Washington, D.C., including the Pentagon and federal agency offices

This is a full-time position based in McLean, Virginia, requiring five days per week on-site. Local travel throughout the Washington, D.C. area is required, but the role does not involve regular cross-state or overnight travel.

REQUIREMENTS
• Approximately 4–6 years of relevant experience across software engineering, applied AI, machine learning, or AI research
• Strong Python engineering skills with demonstrated end-to-end delivery experience
• Experience building and deploying agentic AI or large language model systems into production
• Hands-on experience with RAG pipelines, multi-agent frameworks, tool-calling agents, or related LLM orchestration technologies
• Experience building data pipelines and working with large, complex, or fragmented datasets
• A combination of software engineering and AI/ML experience rather than a purely traditional software engineering background
• Experience working directly with customers, government stakeholders, operators, or other external partners
• Experience at a government-facing, defense technology, or national security technology company is strongly preferred
• Startup experience or another clear record of independently owning and delivering technical projects is preferred
• Experience with distributed systems, machine learning infrastructure, or reinforcement learning is a plus
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, machine learning, engineering, or a related technical field is preferred, although demonstrated technical depth is more important than a specific degree
• Must be willing to work on-site five days per week in McLean, Virginia
• Must be willing to travel locally to federal agency and government sites throughout Washington, D.C.

HOW TO APPLY
If you're passionate about building agentic AI systems that solve real mission-critical challenges for the federal government, we'd love to connect.
