Emergency Radiologist 


School of Medicine Faculty 


Position Description:  


The Department of Radiology at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking an Emergency Radiologist to join the Division of Emergency Radiology. This position supports the department’s clinical, educational, and academic missions within a high-volume academic medical center and Level I Trauma Center environment. 


The Division of Emergency Radiology provides high-quality imaging interpretation services for emergency department patients at UNC Medical Center and affiliated clinical partners. Emergency radiologists work closely with Emergency Medicine, Acute Care Surgery (Trauma Surgery), and multidisciplinary clinical teams to support the rapid diagnosis and management of complex trauma, surgical emergencies, and urgent medical conditions. 


Division faculty are highly skilled in the interpretation of radiography (x-ray), fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed in the emergency setting. Faculty provide timely and accurate diagnostic interpretations that directly support acute patient care and emergent clinical decision-making. 


This position follows a 7 days on / 14 days off schedule structure. Evening and overnight shift opportunities may be available, with scheduling details evolving alongside continued division growth. 


Position Responsibilities: 


  • Interpret emergency and trauma imaging studies, including radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT, and MRI examinations performed in the acute care setting 


  • Provide timely, high-quality diagnostic interpretations to support emergency department and trauma patient care 


  • Collaborate closely with Emergency Medicine, Acute Care Surgery, and multidisciplinary clinical teams in the management of emergent conditions 


  • Participate in the education and supervision of diagnostic radiology residents, fellows, and medical students 


  • Participate in departmental, divisional, and institutional quality improvement initiatives 


  • Engage in scholarly, academic, or research activities consistent with departmental needs 


  • No expectation to interpret MRI or pediatric imaging studies, and no requirement to perform procedures as part of the Emergency Radiology Division clinical practice 


Appointment Details: 


This is an open rank, fixed term faculty appointment at the rank of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, commensurate with experience and qualifications. 


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: 


  • MD or equivalent 


Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:  


  • Board certified or board eligible Radiologist 


  • Fellowship training in any radiology subspecialty (including, but not limited to, Abdominal Imaging, Cardiothoracic Imaging, Musculoskeletal Imaging, or Neuroradiology) or equivalent clinical experience 


  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams 


  • Interest or experience in resident and fellow education in an academic medical setting
